dwatson636 Posted February 27, 2013 #1 Posted February 27, 2013 Hi All, How many of you use the helmet lock on the side off the bike? I understand it locks it up thru the d rings, but what keeps people from cutting thru the web strap to steal the helmet? Dave
slowrollwv Posted February 27, 2013 #2 Posted February 27, 2013 I don't think the helmet would do them any good if they cut the strap on the d-ring. But they could cut it just to be A$$ holes though.
mraf Posted February 27, 2013 #3 Posted February 27, 2013 We use ours quite a bit. Ours hang off the back. We will put them in the trunk if possible. I figured if someone wants them bad enough to cut them loose they can have them. Cutting them loose kind of disables anyone from using them safely anymore.
Nemo Posted February 27, 2013 #4 Posted February 27, 2013 I have a pair for sale if anyone is interested.
etcswjoe Posted February 27, 2013 #5 Posted February 27, 2013 I use mine, like any other lock they keep the honest people honest.
rougeray Posted February 27, 2013 #6 Posted February 27, 2013 Use mine all the time. Had the misfortune to lose one. The one I have left was loose the other day so I caught it before it fell off. Nemo I sent you an email..
dwatson636 Posted February 28, 2013 Author #7 Posted February 28, 2013 Use mine all the time. Had the misfortune to lose one. The one I have left was loose the other day so I caught it before it fell off. Nemo I sent you an email.. When you say lose one, did some one steal it? If so, how did they do it? I contacted my insurance company and they said a stolen helmet would not be covered on my bike coverage. I would have to claim it on my homeowners/rental insurance.
RedRider Posted February 28, 2013 #8 Posted February 28, 2013 When you say lose one, did some one steal it? If so, how did they do it?. It is held on with a single bolt. My clutch side lock fell off while riding thru Chicago. Haven't missed it. RR
creole Posted February 28, 2013 #10 Posted February 28, 2013 We use ours on trips, when the bike, bags and trunk are all packed, the helmets are either on our heads while moving, or locked on the bike when parked.
djh3 Posted February 28, 2013 #12 Posted February 28, 2013 If the trunk is full and we are going to be away from the bike for a good amount of time we will lock them up. Worst thing I have had happen using the locks is it has rained while the helmet is hanging. Lucky it wasnt a heavy rain just a quick shower, but still we were an hour and half from the house and wearing a damp helmet ick
Flyinfool Posted February 28, 2013 #13 Posted February 28, 2013 As mentioned if the cut the strap the helmet is no use to anyone. The helmet manufacturers will not sell a new replacement strap or other safety related parts. Or at least Shoi will not, I tried, they said no way.
kevin-vic-b.c. Posted February 28, 2013 #14 Posted February 28, 2013 If the trunk is in use when we are traveling we used to use them, our new helmets do not have D rings so now I keep a good adjustable cable lock with me to put through the face and lock the helmets and/or our jackets to the bike. As a lock smith put it too me not too long ago.... locks only keep the honest honest. If they are out to steal they will steal. If they cut the strap the helmet will be useless so they are likely doing to be that which was mentioned earlier.
MikeWa Posted February 28, 2013 #15 Posted February 28, 2013 I have a pair for sale if anyone is interested. I am interested. Mike
cabreco Posted February 28, 2013 #16 Posted February 28, 2013 I took mine off when I installed the backrest, Eventually I will get to retrofit them back on.
Wade 2000 Posted February 28, 2013 #17 Posted February 28, 2013 Use them all the time, mostly as hooks but also as locks when in schetchy areas
dacheedah Posted February 28, 2013 #18 Posted February 28, 2013 after my wife fills the trunk, thats where we lock them. I can honestly say I have never heard of anyone doing that in all my years of riding.
rougeray Posted February 28, 2013 #19 Posted February 28, 2013 When you say lose one, did some one steal it? If so, how did they do it? I contacted my insurance company and they said a stolen helmet would not be covered on my bike coverage. I would have to claim it on my homeowners/rental insurance. No one stole it or the helmet, it vibrated loose. Almost lost the 2nd one as it was loose when I went to use it.
seabeetom Posted February 28, 2013 #20 Posted February 28, 2013 Well Dave, I reckon cutting the strap on the helmet would make about as much sense as putting screen doors on submarines. Even this here Dirt Sailor knows that:rotf: Sorry shipmate, couldn't resist
ragtop69gs Posted February 28, 2013 #21 Posted February 28, 2013 I use mine for the helmets. As an upper mounting point for my flag pole and to lock up a jacket by running a cable thru the sleeves.
rickardracing Posted February 28, 2013 #22 Posted February 28, 2013 We use them if the trunk is full. Same here. My main concern is some smart a%% dropping a dookie in one of the helmets while I am in a store. But if they cut the strap the helmet is useless.
