two things... your transition pipe looks to have two bends but the stock muffler only has one bend.. why? and how did you seal to the transition pipe to the cross over chamber and to the muffler? and looks like you are just supporting the front of the muffler so how did you support the rest of the muffler? (the oem muffler has a bracket near the balance point and so I guess the crossover connection is enough to stabilize it). I have road king mufflers coming.

The flex pipe was all wrong. You can put it over the collector box outlet, but you cannot get it to seal inside of a H-D muffler inlet...

But, here is what I did:

The pics show a hanger attached to the muffler mounting bolt. An H-D muffler clamp is welded to the hanger. The transition pipe is custom bent. Complete install cost me a C note...

I got my road king muffs today and see I have a piece of galvanized fence pipe that fits nicely into the muffler (no flat copper band gasket) but this same pipe does not fit over the collector while the copper gasket is in place.. I didn't have much luck trying to tap it off. will torch heat help this? And while we are at it, is there a real need for the flat copper gaskets if the pipe fits nice??

Thanks,

I have ultra copper and thought it might make it too difficult to pull the pipes. Guess I can put it on just the muffler side and see.. And add it to the collector side if necessary..

Even if it fit really nice I would still get some Permatex Ultra Copper Maximum Heat Gasket RTV and use it as installation lube.

Maybe make it difficult to pull pipes buy my experience was different. I had FMF Q2 muffler on my DR650 but instead of repacking I decided to go with a Gixxer can. The FMF install had me using the Ultra Copper to seal between headpipe and muffler pipe. I don't recall any particularly gnarly procedures to separate those when I put on the Gixxer can and I think I used Ultra Copper again to mount it. Could be my memory is faulty and YMMV but I would rather have it work well and not leak even if it was slightly more difficult to remove.

And yes, the Q2 is for sale if anyone wants one. I also have a complete 2002 GSXR1000 exhaust set, minus can, if anyone has been looking........

I have a similar dilemma in mounting my newly created pipes that go from the collector to the Rk's I just came from the auto store and ended up getting a very short roll of aluminum type muffler patch. I will try putting a strip around the collector pipe and see if it takes up the little slack in there and keeps a seal once the clamp is tightened. I hope to try mounting mine on Sunday since tomorrow I am riding to Phoenix with a group to put the bikes in a bike show. :biker:

I fabled bends from fence pipe and then made new copper band seals from 1.5" copper pipe. Type k was smallish leaving a gap but I think thicker wall type L or M would fit.

Oh and after looked closely at how I would fab the mounting bracket, and how far back the muffs had to sit (after bending some fence pipe for the transistions), I scrapped the RK muffler plan (they did sound good attached directly to the collector for a test), & I modified my oem muffs by cutting off the cones and drilling the rear baffle plate and punching some 3/8" holes through inner baffles. Sounds great. Runs good, but have some slight popping out exhaust. Think it runs slightly lean like this.. I put pics on another thread.
