Seat Question

I've noticed in pics that the RSTD seat doesn't seem to sit as deep as the RSV seat. Maybe I'm halucinating?? Anyway will a TD seat fit on a RSV???

Well I know that some folks have adapted RSV seats to their TDs, so they can' be that far off. I do not recall ever hearing someone going the other way, normally the folks making the change to the RSV seat do so to get the comfort of the pillow top seat.

The Venture has a plastic tab in the rear and two threaded posts in front to secure it. The RSTD I believe has two slotted tabs that bolt in from each side. I matched my seat up with a friends RSTD and it wasn't very close. Surprised me

I donno?? I just saved your pics so I could flip them back and forth and the only thing I can see that's different between the two pans are the mounting studs in the RSV?? What I would be looking for is for the seat to sit higher than stock with less rise in the candle. Most of the RSV seats I've seen sit deep with a bunch of rise at the back which doesn't allow me to slide back a bit and crowds me forward into the tank. Attached is a pic of one I saw on eBay, but the BIN was more than I wanted to spend....

My friend with the TD says my seat crowds him forward also. He is about 6'3" and a big boy. For me I feel that the TD sits lower?? I am 6' and 220 with 32" leg room and I definitely prefer the RSV seat. My buddy also always uses a Wooly Pad and I ride on the stock seat.

You probably sit lower because the bike frame is lower. From the pic I think you can see the easy transition up to the passenger. I'll check around a bit more, and if I run into one cheep I'll give it a try. Otherwise a trip down to Corbin in Holister might be in order when summer rolls around. They will custom build you a seat in their service dept in a day. They use a one piece seat pan like those on a 1stGen. Maybe that's the reason I rode to Colorado and back on my '83 without a bit of a problem, and the ride to Wyoming and back on a pillowtop almost rectum...

I think you are right, it sits lower in the frame. The downside is a TD has less stock padding. Have you tried a seat pad?? Maybe that would sit you high enough to scoot back on the seat.

I have a Corbin and I am not a fan. I am a pretty big guy (6'4" and about 290). The Corbin really pushes me forward and leaves no room at all to slide back even a little. I have been on the prowl for a stock seat as it seems to fit me better.

There is an album in my profile with mulitple shots of the venture and td seat side by side. You can also see my bike with the TD seat and the Venture Pillow top on it. The venture pillion is taller than the TD which adds to the rise behind the rider seat. I don't think one sits lower in the frame than the other necessarily since other than tabs and what not the rstd frame and venture frame are the same.

 

I put up a thread with pics showing whats involved to go from Venture Seat to TD. I'll see if I can find it. (On edit: Looks like all I covered was the rear seat in a post in this thread. Album in profile has all the pics http://venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=60469&highlight=Venture+Seat )For the TD Its a bolt on affair with some mods that are reversible. For the TD rider seat on a Venture at a minimum you would have to find a way to either add studs to the TD seat or add weld nuts to the venture frame (not recommended) to use the TD mount.

 

The easiest thing to go the other way would have rick butler install the TD seat foam and upholstery on your venture seat pans. check with him but he's done that before I think.He can do is majic to the foam while he's at it. Your passenger will not be as happy on the TD pillion either......Its not bad but its not a venture pillion by any stretch.

 

My TD seats are in my closet. Don't want to sell them, but I'll ship them to you if you want something in your hands to experiment with, see if it works ,etc. Lots easier looking at the real thing than pictures.

Probably the Corbin was built to fit the 99%'rs. I'm hoping that if it come to doing the Corbin dance they can custom make one that will fit me better than an 'off the shelf'... I have a Corbin on the '91VR and it feels fine... mind you it's still a single pan 1stGen...

Thanks for the pics. To me it does look like the TD seat sits shallower than the RSV. One thing I've found is the pillow top may look cushy, but in my case they squish down even deeper than the stock saddle and create more of a rise to the passenger. Rick Buttler did do the mod last year to releave the numb tailbone area, but the jury is still out on the seat, as due to health issues I haven't been doing any riding or wrenching in a long while. That's about ready to change...
