Can someone measure a 2nd gen drive shaft for me please??

 

I need overall length of it. I have reason to believe it is longer than a 1st gen (MKII) by about an inch. This is based upon measurements of the swing arms I have.

 

If you have an extra one, let me know, fairly sure I need it.

 

1st picture is 1st gen, 2nd is from an RSV.

Like "old" people getting shorter with age.... maybe the 1st Gen shaft shrunk ?

And dare I say it.... bigger is better and since the bigger one is on a 2nd Gen.... that makes the 2nd Gen the better of the Gen's ! :rasberry:

You are correct, it is an MKI, I attached another picture of the two side by side. The MKI has a different mount bushing for the brake caliper than the MKII does.

 

I remember I needed a longer shaft on Tweety when I went to the MKII swing arm. Micarl had one that is on Tweety now.

 

I may be OK with the MKII spare shaft I have. That's reason I need a measurement on the RSV to Verify it.

 

I know the shaft is the same on the final drive end, and I am fairly sure it is the same on the universal end. So that leaves length to be verified.

 

This is one of the many questions that are coming up on this project.

 

Don't even get me started on the shifter shaft, its gonna have to be special.

I have my stock rear and drive shaft in the garage. The shaft looks to be 16 in. or a little longer. I didn't remove it from the drive. This would be overall length end of the universal to the end of the drive gear. Does that help?

Bigger takes longer to turn. Is that why they are Slower??:think::whistling:

It will probably get me a close estimate.

 

I will have to go dig out 2nd gen shaft tomorrow.

Looks like it measures at 14 3/4". Mine is out right now awaiting on my rear drive coming back from RMSportmax hopefully tomorrow.

 

Ok, then I need a drive shaft.

 

My MKII shaft is 13 3/4" long.

 

None on Ebay that I found, other than ones included with final drives, which I have a VMax geared one ready for bike.

 

Anyone have one to sell??

I had searched on drive, then on shaft, but not driveshaft.

 

Ebay doesn't allow wildcard searches anymore so I missed this one.

 

Sent him a message to check length & if it is correct it has a new home.

 

Now back to that pesky shifter shaft.

1Gen Vmax Shifter Shaft is longer than anything, because it protudes through the Stator Cover.

 

I am having a 1st gen shifter shaft modified so I can use the forward control setup that a 2nd gen RSV uses.

 

The 2nd gen has a longer shaft to connect to shifter linkage. Problem is that the shaft is a larger diameter than the 1st gen. I can't find an SD oil seal that will fit into the 1st gen crankcase and fit the OD of the larger 2nd gen shaft.

 

Having a 1st gen cut right where it comes through the case on left side past oil seal. then drilling and tapping. Inserting a case hardened threaded stud in 1st gen shaft. Cutting 2nd gen shaft off at needed length and drilling and tapping it. Stubbed 2nd gen shaft will then be screwed onto 1st gen shaft after 1st gen shaft is inserted into block. Red loctite on both will hold them, I hope.

 

Bought the drive shaft Don found for me from Ebay seller, he had measured it & it was what was needed.

I'm sorry to hear about that Problem.

 

I'm not fond of the Loctite and threaded Stud Idea in this Case.

 

I fear the twisting Forces will be too hard on the small Thread of the Stud and will cause you Grief more sooner than later.

 

I'd suggest a long Bore through the short, 2Gen End Shaft and use a long, high-grade Allen Head or Torx Bolt to connect the two Shafts. Even better if the End of the Shaft are at least, slightly, teethed. Bolt head could be Counter sunk to make it pretty hidden.

 

To make a teethed connection, one could you use a Thread Chisel as a Pricker and use it in the Head Stock of the Lathe to "ream" the Teeth manually. Turn the Lathe Chuck for 30° or so and repeat. Not nice machine Work, but works and doesn't take too much Time if a Mill or a Tool isn't available. Excuse my bad Explanation, Machining specific english is not my Expertise, i hope you get the Idea.

 

Other Idea would be to fabricate a special Clamp to enforce the Connection between the two Shafts and use clamping Force. If enough Space is available ....
