I was on the Vmax outlaw site and they sell a fan switch that turns the cooling fan sooner. Has anyone tried this on a Venture or will it even work?

 

I have one on mine. It does work and keeps the bike cooler in my opinion. It's easier to keep the bike from getting hot, than it is to try to cool down an overheated one.

 

Downside is the fan runs a much higher percentage of the time, thus more drain on a charging system. I have upgraded battery, regulator & stator so it isn't a problem.

 

Below is a clip from the VMax site about a much lower cost version of the lower temp fan switch. I have not tried it though. I bought one on Ebay for about $45 and it works fine. The thread size mentioned below is different on an MKI than it is on an MKII, I think.

Lower Temp Fan Switch


Like many, I noticed my water temp gets very close to the redline before the fan kicks in. Once it does, it cools down nicely but I feel more comfortable with the fan coming on at a lower temperature.

 

The thread for the switch is 16m x 1.5. Using that info, I did some searching. I found a good cheap alternative on ebay that switches on the fan significantly earlier than the stock one. The one I got was from a 1988 Chevy Sprint, part number Beck Arnley 201-1367.

 

Closes @ 185 Deg. F; Opens @ 194 Deg. F

 

Fits in with no problem and works like a charm. Fan comes on a lot more but the water temps don't get over half way up the temp gauge. It cost me 5 bucks plus shipping.

I bought one of these from ebay. I haven't done a long ride yet but I let it idle until the fan came . It came on hair over halfway on the gauge.:cool10:

My 83 came with a rocker switch the previous owner installed to be able to turn on the fan as needed manually. You do need to watch the temp gauge to know when to turn it on but really haven't had it on but a couple of times and probably didn't need to then.

Do you know if the 83 model would be the same as yours?

 

The fan thermo unit as well as the radiator joint housing changed in 1986, the fan thermo unit is not interchangeable. The threads are much larger for the fan thermo unit on the 1986-1993 bikes.

OK what is the switch you are talking about? Is it a direct replacement of the Yamaha switch? I'm asking as the bike I have does not get as hot as what I've read on the forum before my fan kicks in. What is the temp gauge showing when the replacement switch kicks in?
