The online rates for UPS are different than the rates you pay at a UPS Pack N Ship franchise store if that's where you went since they make money on the shipping (and the packing as you learned). If they can sell you the 15" height and in the end UPS only bills them for the 14" height they make more. Dimensions and weights are estimates entered in the ship profile, but when you have an account (Like a UPS Store) you get billed on actual if its off significantly. My work has accounts with both UPS and Fedex. Fedex Ground is consistently cheaper than UPS ground, inclusive or exclusive of our discount. Fedex Ground shipping from Tennesse to Florida for a box of miata parts 23x23x7 and weighing 23lbs was 15.02. Freight cost will always be the higher of Actual weight or Dimensional weight.
