KISSFAN Posted February 9, 2013 #1 Posted February 9, 2013 Had to replace my stator cover due to a piece being broken off of it. Ordered a new stator cover, decided to throw it on, but I forgot the gasket, so I used RTV until it arrived.. Just wanted to try it out to make sure it all worked. When I went to start it, it seemed like the gears were binding up and it would turn over very slow.. Is this because of the RTV or maybe I don't have the gears lined up right? I am putting the gasket on today, but only want to do this once more.. Also, how does the shifter linkage go? It is on backwards apparently.. Thank you, Joe
Squeeze Posted February 9, 2013 #2 Posted February 9, 2013 You need to have the Gasket in there or the Starter Gears will bind.
bongobobny Posted February 9, 2013 #3 Posted February 9, 2013 When back together the knurled piece should be pointing down and the arm should be diagonal. If you are off a tooth you will notice ithe knurled part does not move as far in one direction as the other direction...
dingy Posted February 9, 2013 #4 Posted February 9, 2013 (edited) Pictures attached of shift linkage installed. The gasket thickness does make a difference. Also RTV where the cables for pickups & alternator pass through rear of case. Gary Edited February 13, 2016 by Freebird
KISSFAN Posted February 9, 2013 Author #5 Posted February 9, 2013 Thanks guys! Gasket was the problem! Switched the footboards back to pegs, and I'm a happy camper now!
frankd Posted February 9, 2013 #6 Posted February 9, 2013 There is a dot on the shifter shaft that you center in the gap in the lever. This allows you to align the linkage properly. Frank D.
