Black wing Posted February 8, 2013 Posted February 8, 2013 ok so my carbs are junk, needs all new jets, gaskets, diaphragms, and one slide. and that will cost me $550.00 before taxes and i cant even be sure that will get my bike running A1 as one of the carbs has a large spot worn at the top of the slide tube and im not sure all the passages are clear. also im not sure what the diaphragms on the side of the carbs are for and have never checked them ( would add $200 to replace them). so at a possible total of $700 or more to completely renew my carbs whats would it cost me comparably to just buy a set of four fully functioning carbs?

Like Forest Gump said, you never know whats in a box of chocolates. The set you buy may be just as bad. Outside appearance is not a good indicator of carb condition inside where it matters. Gary
Snaggletooth Posted February 8, 2013 Posted February 8, 2013 Boy you opened a can of worm with this one. I'm assuming your having a shop do the work therefore the high costs. Prices can go high even doing it yoursel. I spent almost $350.00 doing my own and didn't replace the diaphragms at the time. New floats alone were $125.00 for a set of 4 WITH a discount. Buying parts yourself can save you some bucks. You mentioned the diaphragms on the side of the body, the smaller ones I assume again, and I think they are called the decel valves. They seem to be availble from several sources for about $20 to $25 bucks each. A full set of main diaphragms can the have for less than $100.00 from one source we use. A bit under the $200.00 you mentioned. A single slide with diaphragm assembly can be pricey. I wasn't sure if you meant the slide itself was damaged or the sleeve where it seats in the body. Is it's the body damaged you might as well buy a used set and start from there. You wouldn't like the cost of a new body if you could find one. Buying a set off eBay is risky, (I just saw Dingys post) as you will probably, and will need to end up doing a full rebuild anyway. If you want to shop a bit for a full working set of rebuilds check out this site. http://www.wgcarbs.com/ From what I've heard the work is excellent and prices are based on how much it will cost to rebuild yours to replace his stock.
MiCarl Posted February 8, 2013 Posted February 8, 2013 Small diaphragms on the side are air cut off valves. They reduce idle air when coasting to reduce backfiring. You cannot get a new set of carbs. Any used ones are an unknown quantity. Personally, I'd suggest rebuilding the ones you have. Then you'll know what you've got.

Blackwing, I happen to have a full rebuilt set. Originally came off an 88; ole Crimson Tides old bike. He had new diaphrams and one slide replaced by The Motorcycle Shop in Hurst, Texas. The top mechanic disassembled all four carbs, soaked them in some kine of a cleaning solution, replaced all the diaphrams new, one slide as well as some other stuff. Reinstalled back onto Crimson Tides 88 and the thing still didn't run. Turned out to be something with either the pickup coils and then the TCI. Anyway Crimson Tide parted out the entire bike. He sold the carbs to another member out in Ca and that member never used them. That member sold them to me as I thought if I ever needed a set, I'd have a spare set. But, I will l soon be putting my 86 up for sale as I have gone sport touring and purchased a new FJR and have sunk several thousand bucks into it making it even more of a touring bike. I won't be needing this extra set. These carbs are clean to the bone, and should do you good. PM me if interested.
Black wing Posted February 8, 2013 Author Posted February 8, 2013 snaggle tooth i am doing the work myself and that is the cost to buy all the individual parts alone. and by worn slide i meant both the slide itself ( broken in half and held together by platic wood) and the slide tube it goes in which is worn at the top right into the cast all the diaphragms have so many holes plasti dip cant hold them, and the air cut off diaphragms only seem to come as kits for 40 each at what i found and would certainly be bad.
Stanman Posted February 8, 2013 Posted February 8, 2013 Blackwing, I also have a set that came off an 86. I can't remember the condition of the diaphragms but they may need replaced. An issue I do remember is one of the mixture screws was stuck and I did not take too much effort to free it. If you want them you can have them for little more than the price of shipping. PM me if interested.
