ZRX1100 Posted February 6, 2013 #1 Posted February 6, 2013 First post, and I gotta say this seems like a good site. None of the negative crap I see from the Harley guys LOL. Anyway I'm a sport bike guy for the most part, but the new fiancé really has a problem with my ZRX. If you've ever looked at the passenger seat on a ZRX it kinda brings to mind a torture device of some kind. On our first ride together she put her hip out, not good. Anyway I am looking at getting something more appropriate, and I have always kinda liked the first gen VR. This way I can pick one up for joint rides and keep the ZRX for canyon carving, as I have seen some great deals on first gens. Of course as a bonus I could put collector plates on it for cheap insurance. I'm looking for links to road tests of first gens if anyone knows where I could find some? Looking forward to chilling out reading some posts.
Freebird Posted February 6, 2013 #2 Posted February 6, 2013 I just uploaded one test to one of my other sites because it is a large file and if enough people look at it, it could suck too much bandwidth from this one. It is in .pdf format. The test is from 1983 for the 1983 Venture. I would recommend that you look for one '86 and newer to avoid the well documented 2nd gear issue. http://www.dnelson.com/venture/83test.pdf
wes0778 Posted February 6, 2013 #3 Posted February 6, 2013 to asylum!!! And YES it is a good site, more like a family. I don't have one and have only ridden one once, but others have described the 1st Gens as 900lb crotch rockets and will carve the curves with the best of them...
deepforkriver Posted February 6, 2013 #4 Posted February 6, 2013 Of course as a bonus I could put collector plates on it for cheap insurance. That was as politically correct as I have ever heard a first Genner put it...... WELCOME!!!! You are gonna fit in very well! :rotfl:

Any Royal Star will be comfy for the fiancé, but "THEY" say first gen's are faster. I rode one and it was a dog. OK it needed a tune-up badly, but hey!
eusa1 Posted February 6, 2013 #7 Posted February 6, 2013 Welcome from Illinois:cool10: C'mon down to the international rally at Galena Illinois this year and see a ton of first and 2nd gens , along with a good mix of everything else. Mike

deepforkriver Posted February 6, 2013 #10 Posted February 6, 2013 HURRY! SOMEONE SELL HIM SOME SAFETY CHROME BEFORE HE GET'S AWAY :mo money:
Dragonslayer Posted February 6, 2013 #11 Posted February 6, 2013 Once you get that 1st genner you'll probably scrape that crotch rocket thingy. The comfort on the first genner is great and it will carve a few canyons too. I agree with the boss...... go with the MKII 1st genner 86 and up to 93 you can't go wrong.
pmelah Posted February 6, 2013 #12 Posted February 6, 2013 HURRY! bongobobny Posted February 6, 2013 #14 Posted February 6, 2013 (edited) Welcome aboard!! You can check our classifieds as sometimes members here have one for sale, or watch Fleabay as well, some are good deals, some are not. Yes, I agree with the comments about the MK2, there are a lot of improvements in that model over the MK1 except they are a tad slower than the MK1. You will find a lot of good technical articles on this site as well as a lot of help with any problems you may encounter. Overall these bikes run for over 100,000 miles and have been known to survive in excess of 200,000 miles. The engines are pretty bullet proof. If you do find a good deal on a MK1 don't be afraid to try it out. TRhe infamous 2nd gear problem was corrected halfway thru the '85 model year, and a lot of them were fixed foer that problem as well. All that happens is 2nd gear goes south dropping out of gear under heavy acceleration. Many people have simply just ignored it and continue to ride skipping 2nd. The '83 on the other hand can develop cracking of the frame where the rear shock mounts. A lot of tyhem have been fixed for that, and the issue was corrected with the '84 year. Before buying one check here and several people will advise you as to whether it is a good deal or not. You should be able to find a good running one for $3000 in the states but Canadian prices tend to be higher... Edited February 6, 2013 by bongobobny
Guest Swifty Posted February 7, 2013 #15 Posted February 7, 2013 First post, and I gotta say this seems like a good site. None of the negative crap I see from the Harley guys LOL. well, over time, Venturerider.org has seen the 1st gen rider membership decline a bit, and 2nd gen owners (Harley look alikes) have increased...I always wondered if that was correlated to any increase in negativity? Some Ventureriders are always happy, always positive, and coincidently they are always riding a 1st gen. Go figure. Have I got the bike deal for you!
kevin-vic-b.c. Posted February 7, 2013 #16 Posted February 7, 2013 There are a few of us out here riding year round and loving it. I am in Victoria, we have a few others here and up island, Salt Spring, Vancouver. Welcome aboard :wel_ani3Tay:

C'mon now Swifty...you wouldn't be tearing at the fabric that makes this one of the best MC sites around would ya? The gen 2 can't help it if they look like Harley Davidson. At least the RSV won't be riding on the back of a truck. That said, give the gen 2's some love and stop being silly
PBJ Posted February 7, 2013 #18 Posted February 7, 2013 Welcome to the site. The longer your here you find guys that like you have a solo sport bike and a Venture. My solo is a 84 Honda V65 Sabre. You'll also find guys that have ventures with Vmax engines in them that would give your ZRX a run for its money. this is a great site with lots of good people that will help at the drop of a hat. So welcome and enjoy.
ZRX1100 Posted February 9, 2013 Author #19 Posted February 9, 2013 If I had the time/money combination all figured out I'd build myself something out of the newer 1700 VMax as I'm too damn tall for the actual bike, but that's another story LOL. I've always loved the first gen bike because it would suck the headlight right off a 'wing, and like I said theres something to be said for cheaper insurance, but I'll admit I really like the style of a second gen, I'm just not ready to slow down quite that much ... Yet Admittedly though, the better half REALLY likes the back seat on the new ones. I'll be keeping an eye out for an 86 in blue or black if they exist...

Those slower Hardley look a likes are OK if ya can't find a 1st Gen. THe 86 has been the most trouble free of mine.
