YamahaWoodsey Posted February 6, 2013 #1 Posted February 6, 2013 OK Members I might be going out on a limb again but here goes. To get to the Big Rally this year map quest tells me the quickest way is to go through Chicago ( Not that there is anything wrong with Chicago) but my Big Brother tells me to stay completely away from there because the interstate is a madhouse. So my question to you Fellow Trusting Member's is what would be a good alternate route to take around this problem area. Besides using motor oil and not cooking oil and rubber tires (LMFAO) I guess now its HAMMER TIME let the games begin (lol) . Thanks Jeff Wood. AKA YamahaWoodsey
Flyinfool Posted February 6, 2013 #2 Posted February 6, 2013 I live just north of Chicago so if I want to go east or south I either have to brave Chicago or go WAY out of my way to go around it. If you have a choice stay away from Chicago. If you have to go thru Chicago plan it for the middle of the night so that you will be out of Chicago by 6 am. That is what has worked best for me. Given a choice I will never get near Chicago. I have yet to drive through Chicago without someone trying to kill me, literally. It does not matter if I am on the bike or in the truck pulling a big RV. From WV I would think that you are starting far enough south to be able to miss Chicago without going to far out of the way.
YamahaWoodsey Posted February 6, 2013 Author #3 Posted February 6, 2013 Thanks Jeff. I redid my mapquest and how about going through Indianapolis. It's a few more mile's but least ways I'm far from Chicago. Jeff
Flyinfool Posted February 6, 2013 #4 Posted February 6, 2013 I have only been thru Indy once many years ago. Everything was under construction and it was a mess. I went thru at 1:00 am so there was not much traffic. At least Indy is small enough that you will not spend a half day there like you would in Chicago, IF your lucky enough to actually make it out of Chicago.
rickardracing Posted February 6, 2013 #5 Posted February 6, 2013 Do not go through ANY major cities. Us the bypasses. Yes it may take you a few miles out of your way, but atleast your not stuck in traffic.
Rick Haywood Posted February 6, 2013 #6 Posted February 6, 2013 Thanks Jeff. I redid my mapquest and how about going through Indianapolis. It's a few more mile's but least ways I'm far from Chicago. Jeff Go through Indianapolis towards Bloomington, Il then take either I 39 north towards Peru Il. and then wander the 2 lanes to the galena area or I-74 towards Davenport Iowa and go north. Or you can come to our house and ride up with me ant the wife and Mike (eusa1) and his wife and a few others.

dacheedah Posted February 6, 2013 #8 Posted February 6, 2013 I 80 is no problem unless you hit it at rush hour and in Indiana approaching Illinois and is not known for delays or the crazy traffic. So if you don't hit it between 7-9am or 3-6pm you won't even know you went near Chicago. If you drove 20 miles south you would encounter very little traffic and I have been through Indy when it was rush hour and that was no picnic either. Rick's route looks like a good ride though
Cougar Posted February 6, 2013 #9 Posted February 6, 2013 (edited) Heck that looks right down the road from Ducky's is this where I am going? couple miles from the house. Edited February 6, 2013 by Cougar
djh3 Posted February 6, 2013 #10 Posted February 6, 2013 I would stay as far away from Chicago as I could. The route posted looks like a good start. Depends on how much time you got to burn. Indy the last time I was there we stayed over by the airport and that entire end of town was a disater. The route looks to have you going north around which should work fine. If you got time there are some cool roads over towards the northern KY Cincinati area up the river. I know sometimes time is limited and you gotta ride the slab. But for me that just makes the off the beaten path stuff more enjoyable.
slowrollwv Posted February 7, 2013 #11 Posted February 7, 2013 Thanks Jeff. I redid my mapquest and how about going through Indianapolis. It's a few more mile's but least ways I'm far from Chicago. Jeff I don't blame you for not wanting to go through Chicago. The first time I went to WY. I was driving when we hit there. First and last time I will go there. I am just north of Martinsburg. We could meet up for the ride out to the:cool10: Rally.

AKA YamahaWoodsey Are you planning to ride it in one day? If not I live in central OH and am heading out on Sat. Morn. The route Rick posted goes right by where I live. Would be glad for you to throw in the group. Let me know. You would make 5 bikes in the crew and the third West Virginian :Venture::Venture:
stardbog Posted February 7, 2013 #13 Posted February 7, 2013 There is nothing wrong to go trough Chicago, Flyinfool, man, dont know how did you almost get kiled all the time going trough Chicago?? it must be two things. or you are driving like granma 35 mph on Kenedy Expressway, or you are wearing Green Bay Packers Cheese hat going trough Bears teritory :rotfl: The driving rule is to follow trafic flow. If trafic is moving 70mph in to 55 speed limit.. just follow trafic. Living and working in "State" of Chicago I would say few thinks. It's all make diference on time of the day you are riding trough. Stay away from I 90/94 in hours between 7:30 AM and 9:30 AM as well, between 4:30 PM and 6:30 PM week days and round noonish on weekends. I guess that apply to any major city so rule is same. Other options are Bypass, Chicago has 2 of them I-294 and I-355 before conecting west to i-90 towards Rockford IL and IL 20 to Galena. If you are going trough Chicago, make sure to have enough gas to get to North side of Chicago, otherwise you can end up in not so friendly neighborhoods. if you run out of gas call 311 non emergency and DOT truck will bring you galon of gas for free. just to keep you moving. Any questions oc conserns, please feel free to contact me, and I'll be more than happy to escort you trough Chicago. My cell Ph# is in my profile. Hope to see you in few months.
abusive throttle cranker Posted February 7, 2013 #14 Posted February 7, 2013 There is a ferry crosses the lake. About half way up to door county. Check it out- u may like it!
YamahaWoodsey Posted February 7, 2013 Author #15 Posted February 7, 2013 Thanks for all the sound advice everybody. Like always you guy's come through again. Thanks Jeff Wood
Mike G in SC Posted February 7, 2013 #16 Posted February 7, 2013 Also,,, one word, HOV lanes! Don't forget that in pretty well every state, motorcycles can use the HOV (High Occupancy Vehicle, Diamond lanes) lanes, if you see them. in SE, Atlanta and Charlotte have them. Some larger citys have them and they are great for bikes, not only for time savings but also safety. Just stay in lane and if someone is not happy they can move out to traffic to get around you (or you around them) but they normally move at good speed and people stay in lane without pushing (IMO). This is done via a two lane road IN 32. You will have a 17 to 18 mile ride through scenic farm land and the traffic generally moves pretty good. However you will have to watch for cross traffic and slow moving vehicles and you may encounter some semi trucks. We have been through there a few times. One of the crops looks a lot like corn but is actually sorghum. Not much of it grown in the USA, so this could be the chance to see something unusual.

Echo Don, we drive in Chicago all the time and actually it's no worse than any other big city. Go with the flow . biggest sin is going too slow.
