FROG MAN Posted February 2, 2008 #1 Posted February 2, 2008 Several download sites offer Free and Legal downloads of music so they say. Is there such a thing as legal and free music downloads? I know I know everybody is doing it.Not me at least not yet. I'm looking for a good source of music from 60's to current files of different variety.I need to load up a MP3.I'm just concerned about legalities.

I think alot of those may be SHARING sites, which means you may open yourself and computer up. I'm not really sure, but that's what I kept running across when I was searching it out a while back,
ahoutzer Posted February 2, 2008 #3 Posted February 2, 2008 So, how would this work? Some billionaire who thinks everyone should have all of the music they want has bought up, with his/her own money, lots and lots of music, and now is giving it away? Somebody wrote that music to (in part) earn a living by selling it for money. Money must be involved somewhere, or it is theft. One site was trying to earn money through commercial advertising, so they would pay the record companies for the music with the advertising money. That's the closest you can get to free -- you just have to put up with the advertising barrage. That particular company, last I heard, had not yet convinced the music labels to agree to the give-away of their music in return for advertising revenue. Without that agreement, there is no legal deal. Let's do the right thing, even if it costs us.
Guest BluesLover Posted February 2, 2008 #4 Posted February 2, 2008 It is called peer to peer networking ... basically you have access to everyone's hard disk on their computer and vice versa, so like someone said, there are risks involved. Also, you never know what quality you are going to get - some are real good and others you just delete ... I don't believe that any state/province/country has made it illegal. Personally, I use isohunt.com to look for some very specific songs. There are no charges for that service. I then use bitlord to actually download the mp3s. Most of the music that I have loaded however comes from having borrowed someones CDs (mostly my kids') and ripping the music onto my computer and then transferring it to the MP3 (or my GPS for listening to while on the RSV). There are other services that charge for the service and generally speaking the quality of the music is better. Cheers,
ArcsSparks Posted February 2, 2008 #5 Posted February 2, 2008 Check out Newsgroups (usenet) alt.binairy.music etc. you need to download a reader (I use Xnews it's free) the learning curve is a little steep but you won't be disappointed ing the music you find
bongobobny Posted February 2, 2008 #6 Posted February 2, 2008 Lou, technically what you are doing when you rip music from someone else's CD is also theft! Of course when you rip from your kid's CDs in reality YOU bought them therefore they are yours, however if you were to rip music from your neighbor's CD then you are guilty of theft of music. This goes way back to the beginning of recorded music and yes, recording songs off the radio was in some circles considered theft, much less getting a copy of your buddies new Rolling Stones album... Of curse I've never heard of anyone actually being charged for a crime by doing that nor will I ever lose any sleep over the tapes I made.
Guest BluesLover Posted February 2, 2008 #7 Posted February 2, 2008 Lou, technically what you are doing when you rip music from someone else's CD is also theft! Hey Bob - I wasn't commenting on whether I was stealing music or not, and I have no intention of even trying to justify what I do, or why I do it. I was just being up front about what I do in response to the question that was asked. Everyone has to be at peace with their own actions. Cheers,
bongobobny Posted February 2, 2008 #8 Posted February 2, 2008 Sorry, Blues Lover, I guess that didn't come out quite right. All I was trying to point out is a little known fact on the subject of copyright infringement, not chastise you for anything! I'm just as guilty as the next person!! Are you coming to Kitchener March 1??
Guest BluesLover Posted February 2, 2008 #9 Posted February 2, 2008 Hey Bob - no need for apologies my friend. Copyright infringement is an interesting, highly debatable topic for sure. As I said to my kids ... if it doesn't "feel" right, then it's probably the wrong thing to do ... Unfortunately, I'm not able to make it to Kitchener in March - sounds like a gathering of quite a few is brewing... Cheers,

dray Posted February 2, 2008 #11 Posted February 2, 2008 ok this is what i have found a free site i have used for years and i have never had a problem of any kind www.frostwire.com I also use napster its 14.95 a month and what you can do is down load as much as you like to your computer it is also free to upload to a MP3 or other device just don't click on the buy button. if you do buy it will allow you to burn 2 c/d's and the next one you pay again if you rip/burn C/D's then you pay by the album or track if you burn X-amount of tracks off a album to C/D then you have purchased the entire c/d not just the 4 tracks you have burned so lets say you burn 4 tracks off 4 albums then you burn 4 tracks on the same C/D for a total of 8 tracks on one C/D and the other 4 tracks are off one album then you have to pay for the 4 at 99. each and then on top of that you have 4 off one album so you just bought the album 10. bucks for the album and 4. bucks for the 4 separate tracks www.napster.com www.limewire.com this is another one its owned by the same people as frost wire but for it to work real good you pay a yearly fee of around 20. bucks this fee will allow you to down load faster and do easier searches although i like the frost wire as its easy to use but a bit harder to find songs sometimes you will not find a song under artist you will need to do a individual song search yes they can use only the file that the songs are in and only if you leave it run when I'm not using them i right click on the icon in the task bar and close the program this way there not using any of your bandwidth hope this helped good luck Dray
WilCruise Posted February 3, 2008 #12 Posted February 3, 2008 There are legal free music sites. The thing is they aren't the stuff you hear on the radio. They're made up pf independent (a.k.a. Indie) artists who post their work for free or for minimal fees. One of the bigger examples is podsafe music network. http://music.podshow.com/ This site is focused around independent music and podcasts (podcasts = recorded internet radio and tv shows). Poke around here and you can find a whole new world of stuff, especially if you try some of the podcasts.
