dueyk1111 Posted January 22, 2013 #1 Posted January 22, 2013 Just wonder'n bout ENGINE ICE COOLANT? has anyone used it and what you all thought bout it? stuff is xpensive, $20 dollars a 1/2 gallon! wonder'n if it's worth the xtra money? thanks to all for your input:thumbsup2:
Wade 2000 Posted January 22, 2013 #2 Posted January 22, 2013 I've used it in a Yamaha Grizzly. I did quite a few performance upgrades, bored, head ported, high comp piston. So I was worried about heat. With the Engine Ice I never had an issue, it always ran cool. There is one thing I recall. You must have all coolant flushed out or it reacts with the EI and will crystallize. Mine was a fresh rebuild so no issues
2WHEELSFORME Posted January 22, 2013 #3 Posted January 22, 2013 Are you having an overheating problem?
Wade 2000 Posted January 22, 2013 #4 Posted January 22, 2013 Are you having an overheating problem? That's the question I asked myself right after my response. That said I wouldn't spend the extra$$ on it unless like I said in a high performance setup or a race situation where heat is an issue. My Venture hardly ever gets hot enough for the fan to kick on even 2up with all our luggage.
dueyk1111 Posted January 22, 2013 Author #5 Posted January 22, 2013 no over heat'n problem, just think'n ahead to 30k maint things!
djh3 Posted January 22, 2013 #6 Posted January 22, 2013 WE had a pretty spirted discussion over on the Kawaski board about this subject a couple years ago. I wondered the same thing ICE, water wetter and the like. They are suposed to transfer the heat better and faster. Then it was brought up that the bikes are designed to run @ X temp and thats where the thermostat is going to open, wether it takes say 5 min or 25 min to get to that temp. OK makes sense. Thats where the ECU and everything is set to run emisions etc blah blah. SO I dont know if its worth $20. I forget but there were a couple of those additives that did not play well with standard anti-freez as mentioned. And from what I have read here getting a "complet and total flush" is quit the operation on the RSV motor. If I remember right the water wetter is completly comaptable with all anti-freez so I may add some when I do a flush.
Wrench Posted January 22, 2013 #7 Posted January 22, 2013 I used it in a Suzuki Volusia I had, no problem. Hey 2wheelsforme, you an old leftover from the V.O.L. too???
2WHEELSFORME Posted January 22, 2013 #8 Posted January 22, 2013 Yep I used to have a skunk. Loved the VOL. Even made it to a rally in Euricka Springs around 04 or 05, as well as the first one in Ducktown about 2001 or 02.
Condor Posted January 22, 2013 #9 Posted January 22, 2013 Back in '07 I added Purple [something], a water wetter, to my '83 while at the VR National in Ft Collins. Because it was hotter than he11, and the needle was sitting just under the red during the ride to FC, I decided to give the wetter a try. On the trip back...still in the triple digit temps .... the needle dropped down 2-3 widths. Since then it's always run cooler with the better heat transfer properties of the wetter. I might also add it didn't take a complete flush and add to the system like ICE, but just added a couple of capfulls to the radiator coolant and a capfull to the oveflow...just because.

I was sitting in my garage the other night listening to a song that Popcycle wrote. You DO know that you're immortalized in the VOL hall of fame, don't you?? Man, it seems like it's been a lifetime since my first VOL rally back in '03. I still miss my 'ol bruise sometimes, met a LOT of good folks with that bike.

Had my 01 Vol until about 08 or 09 and finally sold it due to not riding it. I still have some folks I see from the Vol sites but rarely post much over there any more. Checking in once in a while is all, looking to see what's happening. BTW: as far as wetter additatives and the like I prefer to let the engine reach operating temps controled by the thermostat. But IF I had a bike or engine running at high temps a lot I would add in some like Condor did his bike. Larry

Yeah, it seems like about all the VOL "regulars" have quit posting too. The wife and I went to the Maggie Valley Fall rally in '11, still pretty much the old crew. It's kinda strange, but nearly all of them have moved on to H/D's now. I still check in and make a post once in a while, but it's not nearly as much "fun" as it once was. Sorry didn't mean to hijack the thread, just thinkin' about old times.
