OrlinEngh Posted January 16, 2013 #1 Posted January 16, 2013 I going to get a new rear tire for my 92 Venture for the up coming season its looking like I will be putting some miles on this year, and not just the short rides around the area so I am wondering about good tire choices, I have had good luck with Dunlops. I am looking at the extra weight with it all packed up and pulling a trailer. Iam sure that this is like asking what oil is best. Just wondering what tires have seem to of held up the best. Thanks Orlin
Wizard765 Posted January 16, 2013 #2 Posted January 16, 2013 I really like the E3s. Toss up between them and the Avons but I had a wobble with the Avons that I couldn't get rid of. I believe it is bike problem though not a tire problem..
frankd Posted January 16, 2013 #4 Posted January 16, 2013 I like the Avon Cobra..... I've been using them for the last 11 years and the only problem I've ever had is that they attract nails. Last spring, I changed the one on the 83, and it had over 25,000 miles on it (rear). Also last spring I put one on the 89 and now it's got 14,000 miles on it and looks like it'll go way over 20,000. Avon's make the bike feel lighter and more nimble. I've never used the E3's, so I can't say how they are. On the 89, prior to the Avon, I had a Dunlop 591 rear tire. It felt good, but it only last about 7,000 miles. My 89 had a D404 on the rear when I bought it and it also was worn out in about 7500 miles. Before the Avon's, I used to use E2's and they lasted over 20,000 miles, but they got a bit noisy as they wore and made the bike feel heavy in the corners. I think Michelin has a tire out that has harder rubber in the center of the tread that gives it long life, and a softer compound on the edges for better grip. If you can't find an Avon Cobra you may want to consider these.
Venturous Randy Posted January 16, 2013 #5 Posted January 16, 2013 I really like the E3s. Toss up between them and the Avons but I had a wobble with the Avons that I couldn't get rid of. I believe it is bike problem though not a tire problem.. I also suggest the E-3 and I too had the wobble problem when having the Avon Venom on the back. I also knew several other 1st gen guys that had a wobble when one up and speeds from 70 mph and up. In my opinion, the best handling my bike has ever been was with an Avon on the front and an E-3 on the back before I replaced the front tire. I have put about 135,000 miles on my bike since I have had it and have had most of the available brands over the years. RandyA
djh3 Posted January 17, 2013 #6 Posted January 17, 2013 My 09 had E-3 on it when I got it. They felt as good as my 900Kawaski did with the Pierrili MT66. Wich was the best I could find for it. After doing some research and a couple fellows suggesting them here I went with a pair of Micheclin Commander II. So far I think they feel a little more stable in the wet than the Dunlaps did. I happened to catch them on sale @ jake wilson. Most of the time motorcycle superstore is cheaper for me.
