Guest Popeye Posted February 1, 2008 #1 Posted February 1, 2008 As some know from my "I'm Popeye the Traitor Man..." post, I sold my 86VR & got a 97 Wing cuz nav just didn't trust the 86 anymore, after 4 breakdowns....even though I put in $2500. to fix. Well, the 86VR has been in my garage ever since, but today, a truck came & took it away, too. On its way to Germany. They have a HUGE European Venture Club, from there to Norway. It's Gone ! Now I got that 'final' feeling. I wasn't looking for a Wing, but came on a deal that only a fool would pass. We've only rode it 40 miles so far, due to weather & work [& no insurance]. It had really better be a good scoot. I'll have to change my gallery pics when I figure this Vista thing out.
Redneck Posted February 1, 2008 #4 Posted February 1, 2008 Memories.....Ya of 4 rides home in the tow truck.:rotf::rotf:
buddy Posted February 3, 2008 #5 Posted February 3, 2008 Hey Popeye, Your going to love your Gold Wing for sure - I sure do. Peg and I took ours for a road spin last week for about 50 miles weather permitting, going to get over 100mi tomorrow low 70's here. Peg fell in love with the seat and I fell in love with the balance, man this Gold Wing is balanced and the ride is excellent. Don't worry I still have the 83 Beast I like to eat up those Second Gen. every time they come around acting bad I send them home with their tails between their legs with the Beast.......They hate it when I pull a wheelie with two up, course Peg don't like it either Buddy
Yammer Dan Posted February 4, 2008 #6 Posted February 4, 2008 Ya of 4 rides home in the tow truck.:rotf::rotf: "Blue Beast" had 98,700 miles on her when she went and that big V-4 never left me sitting. Lot of tinkering in the driveway but how many times can you think of that one of these (1st Gen or 2nd) things has been sitting because of a engine related problem?? The only time I can think of with her was it really sounded bad when I started it at Skid's and when I got home wouldn't start. 96k and I had to replace starter. I miss that old thing. Push button and go.....Not a show bike but 120 MPH in 3rd gear?? Just sitting here thinking. Going to be a long winter. I got some catching up to do.
hipshot Posted February 4, 2008 #7 Posted February 4, 2008 1st gen venture , for a wing!!! not much of a "horse trader", are ya? lol just jt
Guest Popeye Posted February 4, 2008 #8 Posted February 4, 2008 After being stranded 4 times & a couple roadside fixes far from home, nav said the 86VR couldn't be trusted again...after putting $2500. into it. She wanted a 'newer' & more 'reliable' scoot. Mama wants, Mama gets. Got a decent price for VR on eBay & then found a good deal on a 97 Wing. Wing is newer & supposed to be reliable. Maybe the 86VR just had a run of bad luck...6 breakdowns in one year. Spilled milk now...nav went for a ride on the Wing & LOVED it. It'll be adequate with that 1520cc, 6 cyl engine, and 5th gear OD for mileage. Then is the 2nd trunk that plugs into hitch. The 86 was sure pretty & may never break down again. So, now I have to get used to this Wing 1500SE with many extras. One of the odd things, is how unbelieveably Quiet it is. It has excess power [even 2up], but so did the VR. Less chrome, but custom Deep-Black paint with only chrome trim. The weirdest part is hearing only the wind go by, due to the near silent engine. It WILL be an adjustment for me.
Guest KitCarson Posted February 5, 2008 #10 Posted February 5, 2008 You will love the Wing......as another member has found out in this thread......it is so balanced.....I can riding two up with an educated partner like my wife....at times not even put one foot down at a stop for a few seconds.......balance and low speed handling....superb.....no fighting it around corners.....want to make a u-turn in the middle of the road two up.....just do it.......slow to a crawl and just turn the handlebars....it will go without falling over. It seems if one ever rides one for any length of time....for a couple days.......you are ruined for life.......no other large motorcycle even compares to the balance and handling.......none. As for power......I do enjoy it but will or would never use it...but nice to know no matter what gear you are in and you need a little power to avoid a situation......it is there, you can count on it.
Guest Popeye Posted February 5, 2008 #11 Posted February 5, 2008 Less cleaning time?? Yammer Dan makes a joke, less chrome, but more Black...actually, Solid black, so it'll never look clean while out of the garage. Kit speaks correctly about the power, it's certainly there, but I may never get to it all. I did try-it-out from 0-80mph, and it was a long second, but the thing is so smooth & quiet, I couldn't really 'FEEL' the speed. A little fun lost there. I can't fairly compare much else, since one is much newer. I DO miss that V-4 look, The electronic bar guage for fuel, and especially the gear reading on dash. The Wing has a light for "N" and "OD" [5th gear], but doesn't display the gear being used........I really miss that & now have to count to keep track, and finding neutral is sometimes a pain. But then, there is the bottom line...."Mama's Happy", so life is good, & we have some time off this Summer.
Yammer Dan Posted February 5, 2008 #12 Posted February 5, 2008 ...."Mama's Happy", That makes things easy!!! Hope you get a lot of miles out of it.
