VentureYZ Posted January 11, 2013 #1 Posted January 11, 2013 Just looking for everyones take on the carb slide vacum hole location when reassembling carb slides on my 87. It looks like they should point down at 6:00.
mbrood Posted January 11, 2013 #2 Posted January 11, 2013 I don't believe there is any orientation, it's simply a metering hole so rotational alignment is not important... but as you know, the diameter sure is!
van avery Posted January 11, 2013 #3 Posted January 11, 2013 Don't remember were I read it but yes it should be at the bottom. Thats what it shows on the carb diagram/ section view in the manual page 5-2.
Marcarl Posted January 12, 2013 #4 Posted January 12, 2013 Should be at the bottom to drain any possible moisture,,, at least that's the excuse we use around here,,,, might be different in other parts of the country, but we live here so go by the rules as we make them.
frankd Posted January 12, 2013 #5 Posted January 12, 2013 Yes, it goes on the bottom. The following web page shows that it goes on the 'engine' side, and seeing that our carbs are downflow carbs, that's the bottom. http://jbmindustries.com/Yamaha650.html Frank D.
VentureYZ Posted January 13, 2013 Author #6 Posted January 13, 2013 Thanks for the reply, I remember seeing that on the JBM website now that it was mentioned.
KIC Posted January 14, 2013 #7 Posted January 14, 2013 Hey.. I got one of the slides out of the carbs. One shattered . Still have two left soaking with SeaFoam penetrating oil. The carb that I was able to remove got one little chip on the outer edge this was on the side that faced the air cleaner. Would that have any impact on using it ? The chip is right on the beveled edge as shown in the photos below. I hope the other two will come out soon.
frankd Posted January 15, 2013 #8 Posted January 15, 2013 Bill, It doesn't look like it'd affect the slide. I'd inspect it real close for cracks, and if I could not see any I'd probably round the damaged area off a bit with some emery or sandpaper and then re-use it. Frank D.
greg_in_london Posted January 16, 2013 #9 Posted January 16, 2013 Ouch - has someone levered it up with a screwdriver ? You'd have to look at it in the carb to see if it would affect the vacuum, but those diaphragms look as if they've seen better days. Good luck..
KIC Posted January 16, 2013 #10 Posted January 16, 2013 these were on one of my parts bikes. Looks like it sat outside without an air cleaner. They were stuck and I have been soaking them to get them out. The diaphragms are definitely toast. Just trying to get a couple out for one of the members here.
greg_in_london Posted January 16, 2013 #11 Posted January 16, 2013 That's good - I'm glad to hear that you're not having to rely on them - doing a rebuild with dodgy parts and waiting to see if they do the job, or if your effort has been wasted, is a drag.
jasonm. Posted January 27, 2013 #12 Posted January 27, 2013 a few light strokes of #2000 wet sandpaper
