So Im at a union shop doing some work. I have two guys there. There is a pallet in the way of the door I need to get in . Waited 1 hour for the key guy to unlock door . Waited one hour to find out that the propane guy was being waited on to change tank which was right next to the hilo. So the driver could come and help . One break and a lunch time we could get in the door. I could of done all this in 5 minutes. Skilled trades are allowed in to funny. Glad the job was a T/M job.

Well, last year we actually had a pretty mild winter, the kids didn't even miss any days of school. I've got a cousin that has lived in Midland for the past 25 years or so, and that's what I always ask him, he absolutely loves it up there. I finally got to visit the Midland area in October '08, the company I worked for is H/Q'd in Midland, with facilities over in Hemlock too. Looks like some primo deer territory, and they grow the biggest sugar beets I've ever seen. Maybe sometime I can get up there and do some riding in that "2 week" window!! I'll just say that I paid 28 years of union dues, and I can see both sides of the argument, but I do think the country is leaning the way of "right to work". I think the crappy economy is also contributing that lean.

The only time I was employed in a job with a union I was bumped from my jobs all over the place by the same guy. He was a lousy worker, everywhere he bumped me from the bosses couldn't wait for him to be bumped himself. When he was bumped his first words to the union was where is Waters. It got pretty tiresome at times. Oh, by the way he was hired one day sooner than me. Basically sometimes unions do more harm than good by keeping slugs working when they would have been "adiós" without their protection. Michigan will rebound now that we are "Bailout" the auto industry. If not that they have to be expanding the ranks of the Border Police being a border state. You would think the Canadians were swimming Lake Erie by the amount of them driving around here. You have been warned Swifty. Canadian and Red to boot.:rotfl:

Eddie, man I got a chuckle out of your post. "Wainting on the key guy, then wainting on propane guy to change tank" thing was a hoot. Bad thing is I know its true man. This hurricane Sandy deal did me in a few weeks ago. Our power company down here in Fla sent like 2500 guys up to that area, NJ New York, Maryland etc. They had a report on our news that some of the guys got to New York I think it was and the power workers there wouldnt let them do anything, because they were not union!!!!! What the heck? Man if I'm sittin in the dark with no heat or power and I got some goon wont let a fellow help out because of some club they dont belong to hog wash. Basicly what the power company here said, guys if they dont want our help come on home or we will send you someplace that welcoms the help.

By the way, I spent 20yrs in USAF working on aircraft. We had times it was "waiting on the key guy" stuff. Military guys not so much. We were kind of the get'er done type. The Civial service guys, if it wasnt in the book for them to take a part out of the way they were not touching it.

Yes they did. Drove up the prices of automobiles because of exorbanant wages and legacy costs. Thank you UAW. Company wants a certain profit margin, so they outsource overseas causing the toolshops here to go out of business. I know because I am a non-union worker who sees what work has been shipped out. I worked in a prototype mold shop. We built a ton of prototype molds for the interiors for Ford vehicles. Ford, Gm, Chrysler do not build their own interiors. That is left up to Johnson Controls, Visteon and such. We tried to bid on the production tools. We were told that they were being built in China.

Another company I worked for is NYX. They do mostly the plastic for GM interiors. Owned by the dot indians. The plants are manned by dot indians in Livonia, not Americans. Parts are then put into "American made" cars. Poeple really grind my nerves with this unemployed? Keep buying foriegn mentality. There is NO AMERICAN MADE CARS ANYMORE! Just American assembled. Chevy Aveo, that POS was built in Korea with 73% Korean parts, and 1% American parts with the rest being from other countries. GM brought that car here and sold it to all the lemmings as an AMERICAN MADE car. NOT!!!

Ford Fusion, built in Mexico. Your money that you pay for these vehicles may go to American companies, but those same companies are investing in foreign markets. That money you paid for that vehicle is paying foreign wages who in turn, put their paychecks into their foreign economy. Not ours. I have owned new For, GM and Chrysler products. But my last 2 vehicles are a Nissan Xterra and a Toyota 4Runner. Both have blown the other companies away in fit, finish and overall quality. Our next one is going to be a Toyota Rav4. Honda....builds ALOT of cars here in the states. When you buy one of those, that money may go to a foreign company, but they are investing in our country and that money is going to pay the wages of AMERICAN workers who in turn spend that money in their local economy. If you choose to support the UAW, more power to you. But myself, I am not going to pay an extra 3k for a vehicle just to support the retirees, their bennies or a corrupt union. I am now done with my rant, so let the flaming begin!!

I sold Toyotas for awhile. Amazing the number of recent Ford retirees that came in to buy a Toyota. They couldn't wait to get in once they didn't have to explain it at work.

Don't forget to put the some of the blame where it really belongs. Up until free trade agreements companies had to have plants or other investments in the country they intended to sell(Canada specific). After free trade all our businessess shrunk and moved in the name of profits not necessarily union wages. I am happy living the life I do thanks to unions and not the third world living that the companies steal their profits from. I have worked for companies with and without a union and if the company is fair to its employees than I agree no union is required but we have seen how that works most of the time.

Thing is, most companies operate on very thin margins (Apple excluded!). The reduced production costs translate into reduced price at the store. Example: In 2010 I bought a 55" internet enabled HDTV for not much more than my dad paid for his first 27" color TV in 1972. Adjusted for inflation I paid much less.

 

I can remember in the 1980s it seemed like all the manufacturing was going to Japan. Wages there began to rise and today the Japanese manufacturers are moving their manufacturing off shore. There economy has gone nowhere for almost 20 years.

 

Today it's China and India. Already though China is starting to get expensive and some businesses are moving manufacturing to places like Indonesia.

 

Capital seeks its most efficient use. Overall, artificial barriers to its movement lowers our standard of living.

 

Now, North America is awash in energy. Some energy intensive industries are starting to move here to exploit cheap natural gas. If our governments don't place artificial barriers in place that capital will continue to come here to work.
