For the bumps in the gas tank, try filling it with water and then freezing it. I've never seen it done but the theory is good. Just don't put it in your home freezer or you'll throw everything else out, including the freezer.

Tried that several years ago on a Vulcan tank. Spread the tank out some where it sits on the backbone, but never touched the dents.

Pour boiling water on the dent then rub with dry ice is how the airframe mechanics get hail dents out of airplane skin

The thickness of the steel in these gastanks is gonna prevent you from removing any serious dent from it with airpressure. Once they are dented you can only get that out by a filler and a paint job. There is a small possibillitie removing these dents with a tool that saxophone repairmen use - a sttel rod with a ball on the end and comes in various shapes, bends and sizes. This would though depend of the location and size of the dents. Seen this done to a saxophone with amazing results.

I´ve investigated this quite thoroughly and had a dozen of qualified body shops look at a dented tank I have from the Red Baron - same answer - no can do - to thick - and my dents are rather shallow. Ended up buying a tank from Germany from an insurance bike. Almost like brand new - with just a very small dent in a hidden spot.

Still a friend of mine who is a woodwind/saxophone repair man is gonna have a go at my tank and see if this is doable. Will be interesting to see. I´ll post.

Got the front tank mounts fabricated today. Tank had to be moved rearward about an 1 1/4" to match up with seat. Moving it back also allowed for raising it up a little to clear carb covers by about a 1/4".

Leather cover that was made by Ace High Leather is setting on tank.

Making some progress with Hybrid, almost everything needs some sort of tweaking to get it to fit right. Tomorrow I will work on rear tank mount. Need to weld on relocated thermostat housing tabs and rework the rear head coolant pipe out of thermostat housing to clear tank.

Got an early Christmas present, a small metal lathe from Harbor Freight. I had a 20% coupon that was going to expire and it was on sale, so I got almost $200 off price, about $415. Won't be something I use a lot, but it has come in handy for making a spacer to hold tank mounts at needed spacing and I have made a pair of front wheel spacers that are needed to center VMax rim in the 1st gen forks. Not a real high precision tool, but is adequate for what I need at this time.

interesting fins on this may work on yours just an idea:whistling:

I have seen these on a couple of VMaxs. I was looking on EBay for a set this weekend. I think they might be made by Python.

without the tats ps i asked the guy were he got them will get back with the info if he replies

Some pictures of these lower side covers on some VMax's that I took in Johnstown PA at Rolling Thunder in 2012. We were getting dyno's done and there were some high power VMax's there. Couple of 1st gen's dyno'd over 200 RWHP with a streetable bike.

Sean Morly's VMax face page is linked below. He is currently building a 88 Venture into a bike like Tweety. His will be a little more glamorous, putting a set of Camozzi wheels on it for one thing.

so hows the 2nd gen venture max coming along ??

Haven't done much too it the last few months. Did some upgrades to Tweety. I finally have the exhaust relocation issues fixed with the Hybrid. Will be getting back to working on it this week. It has been very cold this winter, even with a somewhat heated garage.

Right now it is back to a bare frame with only front forks & front wheel on it. Going to paint frame to cover areas that have been modified on it, now spot coated with gray primer.

Goal was to have it running for Oberlin MD, but now hope to be able to bring it to WNY rally & get some pin striping on it.

Tweety has gotten wave rotors all around, a revamped rear brake setup, clear side covers, some more powder coating and mac exhausts.

Progress on Sylvester, A.K.A. Hybrid.

Motor in, exhaust finally mounted, except mufflers.

RSV side covers and valve caps on modified 1st gen motor.

Carb covers & cross brace will be powder coated black as will the cylinder drain plug covers.

Wow, looking real good.

How hard is it to put the 2nd gen covers on the 1st gen motor? I have always wondered if they would work.

RandyA

Water pipe out of waterpump will not fit 1st gen thermostat housing. 2nd gen runs directly to bottom of radiator.

2nd gen stator cover requires use of 2nd gen stator and 2nd gen rotor. Use of 2nd gen rotor requires either 2nd gen TCI or Ignitech TCI.

Middle gear cover use required modification of shifter shaft that transverses motor from clutch side.

Clutch cover did not require any modifications.

...and the valve cover chrome covers just bolted on??

Valve covers & chrome caps are from an RSV. No issues putting RSV valve covers on 1st gen block.

1st gen & VMax valve covers don't have the provision for the screws that hold chrome covers on.
