I think I liked the older style before they went with a front disc brake. The spare wheel/tire carried on the sidecar could fit any of the wheels. Thats a handy feature.

True, but I was told the spare WILL fit the front, but you wont have front brakes till you replace the correct wheel. But this will get you home or to a place where you can fix it or get it fixed. There are still two rear brakes if you have to go this route.

 

Rumours are that the Ural might have fuel injection for the 2014 model year. FI protoytypes are in testing now. Imagine that. Ural, producing a bike thats over 70 years old now, could have FI soon.

 

So where is the FI logo on the new Royal Stars?

Its supposed to be in around the first week of January...great time to break-in a new bike, eh?

 

I'm looking forward to having a bike that doesnt need to sit out the occasional snowstorm we get here in the Texas Panhandle.

 

If your looking to add to your fleet, I think the Ural is a great way to do that. Will it replace a long haul touring bike? I doubt it. Although, some people have ridden them all over the continent.

 

This is the man that made the video of the desert dog. When you show this video to your wife, and shes giggles at the pooch's choice of eyewear, just tell her those are standard issue 'doggles'

some nice photos and videos of the Ural, gonna stop and look closer one of these days next time I'm over by a BMW in Atalanta that sells Urals.

 

Not long ago got caught out not far from my house in some snow on my VTX, got it safely back to the house but I was soaking wet from melting snow and a nervous wreck. Its usually pretty rare to have snow here in GA, I like riding in cold weather, nothing like getting bundled up and riding around, the smell of wood fire in the air, etc. Last couple years we have gone looking at Christmas lights on the bike, stop for coffee & donuts.

 

Watching the ural off road videos remind me of riding for hours and hours all around Eglin military reservation (about 50 x 20 miles of off road in N. Fla.) on a yammy 250 back when I was in the Air Force.

Everyone has their cut-off point. I've heard some people wont ride motorcycles EVER...its just TOO dangerous.

 

I have a buddy who wont ride if the temps are below 60f.

 

I was riding Needles Highway in the Black Hills of South Dakota one year and came across a group of people rapelling off the tall granite spears. We stopped to watch.

 

Several climbers were about 75 feet above us suspended by ropes, hanging over the sides where the drop was several hundred feet. There were a few of them on the ground, working the safety lines. I said to one of them...wow...that looks scary!

 

He pointed at my motorcycle and said, and I quote, "Wow, THAT looks scary!"

 

Its all about perspective.

 

I have ZERO plans to get out on icy roads, in heavy traffic, and try to mix it up with cagers on the commute to work.

 

But I would like to be able navigate some occasionally messy residential roads around where I live. And tackle the gravel roads in this mostly rural area, maybe go camping in an area thats a bit out of reach from the saddle of the road sofa...that sort of thing.
