dwichert Posted January 27, 2008 #1 Posted January 27, 2008 I cut open my collector box today. Removed all from inside and cut center piece out and welded back...I had a used set of Jardines exhaust so i cut them open and removed baffles.......My bud does chrome work and is going to rechrome........My Question is does the venture need back pressure???????????I'm trying to make it louder but don't want to hurt engine? Any input would be HELPFULL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THANKS DENNY:stirthepot:
muffinman Posted January 27, 2008 #2 Posted January 27, 2008 Not to sure about the back pressure question alot of us have gutted our collectors and some even have straight pipes on the bikes out there I got a set of straight pipes but have been to lazy to install them maybe I will get around to it before the August meet in Ashevillle Jeff
bongobobny Posted January 27, 2008 #3 Posted January 27, 2008 Usually the lack of back pressure in any internal combustion engine leads to burnt/cracked exhaust valve seats. Without any back pressure those hot gasses literally blast out past the valve whereas a little bit of restriction slows the gasses down slightly. Non restricted exhausts allow an engine to breathe slightly better thus increasing performance but at the cost of longevity. This used to be an issue many years ago but with newer metal compounds it is not as significant...
Gearhead Posted January 28, 2008 #4 Posted January 28, 2008 IMHO, backpressure is ALWAYS bad for engine performance. It represents power that you don't get at the wheel because it's used up pushing gasses out. That being said, it might cause the need for carb recalibration. The same can be said on the intake side - a restrictive airbox is never good for airflow and power production. However, many here can tell you that with stock jetting, this bike is very sensitive to airbox mods and won't run well. I'm sure some carb recalibration would remedy that, but would be a pain to perform. Jeremy
dwichert Posted January 29, 2008 Author #5 Posted January 29, 2008 Should i rejet the carb? I also have a K An A AIR filter..............Or can i just sysch carbs????????????Thanks for info DENNY:225:
Gearhead Posted January 29, 2008 #6 Posted January 29, 2008 Carb sync is ALWAYS a recommended tuneup item - stock or not. Rejetting is unnecessary with stock airbox and pipes, or with minor pipe mods, but may be beneficial with major pipes mods. Rejetting would be necessary with any major airbox mods. So some searches here and there's stuff posted about how Denden got some more ponies from his engine, and a couple other guys, too. Jeremy
