frodotoo Posted October 9, 2012 #1 Posted October 9, 2012 News article from the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel about motorcycle rider deaths in Wisconsin this year http://www.jsonline.com/business/2012-a-deadly-year-for-wisconsin-motorcycle-drivers-8h75c33-173225031.html Highlights (or low-lights may be a better term) are 102 killed so far, the 4th most since 1986; average age is 48. Speed and alcohol combine for 35% of the fatalities. In 2011, nine Wisconsin motorcyclists died when their bikes struck animals including deer, a turkey, a wolf, a horse and a cow. One rider was killed when a tree fell on him. This year, at least 11 riders have died when their bikes hit deer. There are more motorcycles on the road now compared with years ago - with 303,795 registered bikes in the state in 2011, compared with 175,486 in 2000, according to the most recent Department of Transportation data. Ride safe!
Sailor Posted October 9, 2012 #2 Posted October 9, 2012 I don't know but it seems that just having double the bikes out there is going to increase the accidents and increase them even more if a lot of them are new riders.
Pam Posted October 9, 2012 #3 Posted October 9, 2012 To compare the 2012 stats with year 2000 stats, you would have to factor in the increase in riders, Just like comparing gas prices to 1975. No mater how you look at it those numbers are to high. It would be interesting to know the number of crotch rockets in those numbers. Rode safe
Solodadof2 Posted October 10, 2012 #4 Posted October 10, 2012 This was in the article as well: Ninety-two percent of the motorcyclists killed in Wisconsin last year were not wearing helmets, although this year it seems closer to the 10-year average of about 70%, according to preliminary figures.
BoomerCPO Posted October 10, 2012 #5 Posted October 10, 2012 I'm wondering how many of those fatal deaths involved new riders on crotch rockets..... Boomer....who sez none of the pygmies will ride those rice rockets.
Flyinfool Posted October 10, 2012 #6 Posted October 10, 2012 I'm wondering how many of those fatal deaths involved new riders on crotch rockets..... Boomer....who sez none of the pygmies will ride those rice rockets. Since the average age of the fatalities is 48. My guess is that it is more toward the cruiser/touring style bikes. Due to the age and the cruisers are by far the most common on the road. But this is purely a guess on my part. With the home of HD being here there are a lot of new riders on full dress HDs. Rice rockets have mostly younger riders. They are easy to spot, they drag their feet from a stop till they get going fast enough that they have to pick up a foot to shift. Same on decel, feet are down at 20mph till the stop, then they sit there after they are stopped and downshift to get ready to take off again.
Hummingbird Posted October 10, 2012 #7 Posted October 10, 2012 if 3 riders are 65 years old and have and accident = 195 average if 5 riders are 32 years old and have and accident = 160 average that gives an overall average of 44.3 years old. ???? that makes the younger rider almost 3 to 1 figures don't lie
GeorgeS Posted October 10, 2012 #8 Posted October 10, 2012 I have a " rocket " and I'm not a teen ager !! Also, I'm still alive :)

Just listening to the local news, it is almost always the big heavy bikes referred to.
Hummingbird Posted October 12, 2012 #11 Posted October 12, 2012 I don't recall seeing a dozen crotch rockets at any bar - ever now that I think about it, I can't remember seeing any at all parked at a bar. maybe it's because they're so fast my old eyes just can't pick up the image
