Max Posted September 28, 2012 #1 Posted September 28, 2012 I have an opportunity to pick up a complete, but damaged 89VR for my 87VR. I started comparing part numbers off OEM parts sites. Thought I'd throw out if any of the experts know how compatible the parts are between the two, would save me great deal of time. Thanks .. Max
mbrood Posted September 28, 2012 #2 Posted September 28, 2012 I don't know of anything off either bike that wouldn't interchange.
Pegasus1300 Posted September 28, 2012 #3 Posted September 28, 2012 only change would have been color.
dingy Posted September 29, 2012 #4 Posted September 29, 2012 The lower fork tubes and some of the anti dive internal parts are different. 86~87 the AD valve was on front of tube & 88~93 it was on side. There are some very minor wiring differences between the two years. One was the 86~87 had noise filter chokes in the front & rear brake switch circuits. And I think the trunk mirror light was added in 88, not positive though. Gary
KIC Posted September 29, 2012 #5 Posted September 29, 2012 I have an 87 and a 89. Correct on the front forks but both my 87 and the 87 I took some parts off of yesterday has the trunk light. Haven't seen or run across any other major differences.
Max Posted November 2, 2012 Author #6 Posted November 2, 2012 (edited) new 89 ride delivered yesterday! errr parts bin. The deer made out not so good. Actually considered another winter restoral project ... the boss chimed in immediately 'not happening'. Fairing has extensive L/S damage,at very least need replacement front fender, lower right fairing, right saddle bag, rad front shroud, crash bars and probably other components. Combined with fresh paint the cost would be prohibitive and thats providing the frame & wheels are intact. There's an extensive parts box with a couple of electronic components I don't recognize. I'll post photos later. Edited November 2, 2012 by Max add image
bongobobny Posted November 2, 2012 #7 Posted November 2, 2012 I've seen worse, but the whole front end will need replacing! Triple tree could have been tweeked as well...
goatturtle Posted November 2, 2012 #8 Posted November 2, 2012 I would be interested in the speedometer for replacement in mine.
cimmer Posted November 3, 2012 #9 Posted November 3, 2012 The rear swing arm and shock mounting point is different also. They changed between the 87 and 88 years. Rick F.
Max Posted November 3, 2012 Author #10 Posted November 3, 2012 goatturtle, things are on hold till I determine what will effectively be replaced on the 87 and what will end up in the box. Check your PM.
