Friend has a 89 1st Gen with 95,000. A noise comming from left foot area on deceleration. Higher the rpm at deceleration the louder the noise. Any Ideas-Later

I am wondering if the spot weld on his baffle broke loose in his exhaust collector. Before I fixed mine it sounded like something was knocking or rattling in the bottom end of the motor just at certain places on the throttle and mostly on deceleration I had noticed it. I would check the collector. With mine I could hear it at certain times playing with the throttle while in neutral and I took my boot and pushed up on the bottom of the collector with my toe and it quieted down enough to realize that it was the source of the noise. You can find the way to pull it off and fix it here on the forum.

Thanks guys for the responce. It makes a whinning noise only upon deceleration. When you go to slow down it makes a loud whinning noise. I thought at first the rear end, but he says its comming from his left foot area. Later-

I helped a Michigan member with a "noise" on his 1st gen. It turned out to be that the output shaft where the u joint and driveshaft hook up to was broken. I have heard of this happening a few times and he ended up removing the engine and replacing the shaft.

Put in the pertinant info and go to middle drive gear. It's part # 4 in the drawing.

I thought the same thing Squid but i didnt know they had that problem with any of the ventures but it is happing with a lot of the V*s now the shaft just in front of the u-joint is snapin coming out of the trans

My 86 VR had a loud gear type whine around 45 mph on steady power mostly, but some on decel.

Local shop had to remove the output shaft on the engine (near the left foot as it turns out!) to seal a leak. This (disturbing the gear alignment slightly at the output shaft point) along with lubing everything he could find in the driveline led to near silence. as with many that have "cured" the Venture Whine or chirp, this may come back, but for now I am happy.

Thats exactly what happen with the one that I saw. I have heard of it twice before.

What would cause this and is it only certain years that it would effect?

I'm not positive on the cause of it, most likely the nut loosening up and not keeping everything tight. I have seen it on several different years, so it's not just a set year that has it. I will say that it is rare and nothing to be worried about. Just keep the u joint greased and do your maintenance and more that likely you'll never see it.

I have this noise myself. So the shaft is possibly broken? If it's broken you can still ride like that?

Yes, the bike can still be ridden as most folks dont know what the noise is. The fella that I diagnosed came 60 miles on his to my place and I rode it and then quite by accident saw oil leaking from the seal/boot area and pulled the boot back to see it. He rode it 60 miles back home and then proceeded to tear it apart and fix it.
