star4772 Posted September 17, 2012 #1 Posted September 17, 2012 I am currently using 10W40 syn amsoil in my RSTD and would like to know what oil can I use instead of the amsoil. Its getting higher in cost and harder to find it around. So what can I use in place of it and that it wont hurt what will be left in my bike after I switch? Please don't start an oil dispute just need some idea's. :rotf: Joe
djh3 Posted September 17, 2012 #2 Posted September 17, 2012 Oh my, there must be 100's of posts on this. I would say the general consensous is Shell Rotella T-6 (blue jug) is the winner in cost and correct oil for bike spec. It is Syn and about $22 a gallon at major discount store.
Pegasus1300 Posted September 17, 2012 #3 Posted September 17, 2012 I also like the Shell Rotella but I use the Dino oil. I can buy the 5 gallon jugs at WalMart for under 20 bucks. For myself I can't justify the cost of Syn oil when doing 3-4000 mile oil and filter changes so I find dino oil with a good zinc content. I have used these diesel truck/tractor oils for years and many thousands of miles with no engine failures.
bongobobny Posted September 17, 2012 #4 Posted September 17, 2012 A lot depends on the mileage of your motor. Low mileage motors actually need a little bit of friction to properly seat rings etc so dino oil is the proper choice. Onmce the engine has over 20K on it synthetic is a good choice. I use 15W45 diesel oil myself and change every 4K but now that I'm over 20K I will probably go to Shell rotella synthetic myself...
Miles Posted September 17, 2012 #5 Posted September 17, 2012 Joe, I run Mobil 1 full synthetic 10w-30 in my '06 RSMTD. I slowly changed my engine over from dino oil (regular petroleum oil) to the Mobil 1, by fractioning the amount of dino oil and Mobil 1...as a mix. Increasing the quantity of Mobil 1, over the quantity of the dino oil, until now it is pure...unadulterated...Mobil 1, and I am quite happy. It does not bother my recently replaced Barnett Clutch at all. I am currently going 5000 miles between oil changes, but slightly more if I am on a road trip at the time. The beauty of Mobil 1 is...it can be bought just about anywhere, including Walmart, when on the road.
loehring Posted September 17, 2012 #6 Posted September 17, 2012 Rotella-T syn for me. I have used it for years and wouldn't change.

I want to stick with synthetic so was looking into what to use in place of amsoil but still stay synthetic. Amsoil says not to mix any other oil with amsoil. I don't want to switch to regular oil but want to keep using synthetic but a different brand of synthetic. It looks like Rotella or Mobil 1 are the 2 choices. Thanks all for the input on this, sure glad we did not at start an oil war and cause the prices of gas to go up again. :rotf: Joe
ragtop69gs Posted September 17, 2012 #8 Posted September 17, 2012 I run Rotella T6 "full synthetic" in both bikes and have been happy with it. $21 a gallon at wally world or Meijers.
hunter 1500 Posted September 17, 2012 #9 Posted September 17, 2012 This is the second bike that I have used T6 in and I had the original clutch in the first one without any problems and had 54k on it. This bike I had to upgrade the clutch because I tow a trailer and it was slipping. It was because of the weak clutch they use. The plates didn't have any wear on them to speak of.
ragtop69gs Posted September 18, 2012 #11 Posted September 18, 2012 i use Canola...$2.00 a quart. Well then we probably won't be seeing you on the 28th
kyle Posted September 18, 2012 #12 Posted September 18, 2012 stick with amsoil, 6,000 miles between changes but do filter at 3,000 miles. I have 46,000 on mine and never a problem and only one valve outta spec after 45,000 miles. use seafoam a couple times a season too.
reddevilmedic Posted September 18, 2012 #13 Posted September 18, 2012 you should!! i just let a little leak out to fry up some eggs and taters....
Guest Posted September 18, 2012 #14 Posted September 18, 2012 i use Canola...$2.00 a quart. Got you beat. I use left over bacon drippings. Fun to make and eat (burp) and the grease makes it really slippery. And you just wouldnt believe the pleasant oder that will come out of the exhaust!!!
