Cougar Posted September 7, 2012 Share #1 Posted September 7, 2012 I just put on my second clearview that I found for a awesome price last week. it had been stored for about 2 years in the original box. My Question is will Goo Gone hurt the windshield? I mounted it and started to peel off the plastic covering they put on. but from sitting so long. I have a small area about the size of a grape fruit were it left some sticky stuff. Thanks for Ideas. Just wanted to check before I tried it. Otherwise the shield is in perfect shape. djh3 Posted September 7, 2012 Share #2 Posted September 7, 2012 I wouldnt use it. I would opt for some soapy water like Dawn or the like. I would be afraid that the GOO Gone would have something in it that might harm the coating and cause it to haze. I would try WD 40 before that. Cougar Posted September 7, 2012 Author Share #3 Posted September 7, 2012 Yeah didn't think of that.. maybe I will try some warm soapy water or wd40 thanks
Cougar Posted September 7, 2012 Author Share #4 Posted September 7, 2012 I did find this for residue left on flat screen TV's Mix 1 tablespoon of isopropyl alcohol with 3 to 4 tablespoons of water. For very sticky residues, you can use up to 50 percent isopropyl alcohol. To make this combine 2 tablespoons isopropyl alcohol with 4 tablespoons of water. 2Dip a soft, clean and lint-free cloth into the isopropyl alcohol and water solution. You could use a microfiber cloth or the type of cloth used for cleaning eyeglasses. Wring out any excess solution.
BlueVenture87 Posted September 8, 2012 Share #5 Posted September 8, 2012 I use goo gone on computer plastics all the time without issue, if in doubt try it on the windshield below the trim line. I bet you'll have no problems with it.
Wrench Posted September 8, 2012 Share #6 Posted September 8, 2012 I'm not sure about the Goo-gone either. Before I delivered my Roadstar to it's new owner I had a couple of "politically incorrect" decals that I figured I'd better take off. I had put one over the original cheesy orange safety sticker that came on the Silverado windshield because I couldn't get it off. When I peeled the sticker off a little bit of the orange one came off leaving it looking like crap. I took some duct tape and covered the rest of the sticker, then rubbed it down pretty hard with my hand. Then I started pulling the duct tape back against itself, voila', the old sticker and the adhesive came right off. I had tried just about everything to remove it when I bought the bike and didn't find anything else that would work. You also might try warming it just a little with a hair dryer so the film isn't so brittle too. Good luck!
Eck Posted September 8, 2012 Share #7 Posted September 8, 2012 WD 40 would be my choice, then some car wash soap and water to wash the WD 40 off.
van avery Posted September 8, 2012 Share #8 Posted September 8, 2012 Might try peanut butter. Many times the oil in it will soften the adhesive.

It seems that WD40 should not hurt anything. So many decisions The worst part is that this sticky of course in right in my line of site. go figure. It is also going to be interesting to see how clear vers. tinted will be for me after 4 years. as I ride to work in the morning in the dark. Hazenson Posted September 8, 2012 Share #11 Posted September 8, 2012 actually Peanut butter has a bunch of uses like that, can be used for getting tape and other sticky stuff off of items. wife found that info in a book and It sounded crazy but it does work. But ya need to let it set for a while to let the oil work

alwrmcusn Posted September 8, 2012 Share #17 Posted September 8, 2012 I used Goo Gone to remove the residue left on my tank when I removed the government warning sticker. I also used it on my fair to remove the gummy residue when I removed the eye brows. It has not hurt the paint or finish. .....Note in the photo below that the government warning stick is on the tank, it has been removed for about two years now.
