Mmartin4509 Posted August 28, 2012 #1 Posted August 28, 2012 Hey guys, the kickstand icon on the dash of my 86VR stays on, even when I lift the kickstand,is there a way to fix this? Thanks.
Wizard765 Posted August 28, 2012 #2 Posted August 28, 2012 it is most likely the switch at the stand. You may need to take it apart and clean it. Be sure the connections are good as well.
Flyinfool Posted August 28, 2012 #3 Posted August 28, 2012 Can you still put the bike in gear with the engine running? If it was a bad switch the engine would kill as soon as you put it in gear. So if you can still ride with the icon lit, I would think it is something other than the side stand switch.
Mmartin4509 Posted August 28, 2012 Author #4 Posted August 28, 2012 You can put the bike in gear but when you let the clutch out it dies.
bongobobny Posted August 28, 2012 #5 Posted August 28, 2012 Yup!! Bad kickstand switch!! You can start in gear with kickstand down IF the clutch is depressed. As soon as you let go of the clutch, you lose ground to the ignition circuit. If the kickstand is up the ground comes from there...
Mmartin4509 Posted August 28, 2012 Author #6 Posted August 28, 2012 So can I get away with cleaning the switch? Or just replace it?
Marcarl Posted August 28, 2012 #7 Posted August 28, 2012 If you just hit the light with a hammer it will go out, don't think it will help any with the starting\running thing, but it will make the light go out. As an added bonus you might find that you have 'fixed' some other things in the process.
Mmartin4509 Posted August 28, 2012 Author #8 Posted August 28, 2012 I was thinking a piece of electrical tape would cover that blinking red light nicely.
Dragonslayer Posted August 29, 2012 #9 Posted August 29, 2012 I was thinking a piece of electrical tape would cover that blinking red light nicely. You can unplug the side stand switch untill you can fix or replace switch and the bike will crank and run and the light will go away.
