which side does the radio arial go? is it the one with the male tread or the female tread

If this is for your 86. The antenna goes on the right side if you are sitting on the bike. There should be a bar coming out of the rack that holds the trunk. I don't believe there is a mounting plate on the left side. On the 1st gens the CB antenna is used for both CB and for Radio.

Unless they did a mod it should combine the antennas, I took the combiner off of my 89 and added an am/fm and it made a difference in my fm reception and I believe improved the CB also.

Mechanically on the 86, I don't think it matters one little bit, there are bolt plates on the left and right. Original (and traditional) location is on the right.
