etcswjoe Posted August 17, 2012 #2 Posted August 17, 2012 It's Called FBI Moneypack Virus and here is a link to Nortons forum about it. http://community.norton.com/t5/Norton-Internet-Security-Norton/Problem-with-FBI-Moneypak-Virus/m-p/750034#U750034 If you were able to restart without it run a good virus scan and malware, spyware scan. This is a new type of malware called ransomware.
Wizard765 Posted August 17, 2012 #3 Posted August 17, 2012 By going to an earlier date you have stopped it from running. But the infected file is still somewhere on your system. Download Malwarebyte's Antimalware (the free version) and do a full scan. That SHOULD find and remove the offending file. When you start it for the first time it will ask if you want to try the pro(paid) version but you can decline at that point. The free on works a charm.
Guest tx2sturgis Posted August 17, 2012 #4 Posted August 17, 2012 Why not install a new, problem-free operating system? Linux Mint or Ubuntu would be my choice. Unless you NEED Windows for work or some very specific piece of software, Linux will do everything Windows will, and wont be susceptible to all the Windows malware on the net. Linux is fast, stable, easy to operate, and free. The 2 main questions for a Windows person are: How do I download it and install it? and Will it run the software I need? You can either download it for free, then burn a live-cd, or order one for $10, either way it will let you test-drive Linux, and if you like it, it will step you thru the install process. You can either install it alongside your existing Windows partition, (dual-boot) or completely wipe the old OS and run the new one. Software? Well there are over 36,000 mostly or completely free software packages available for Linux, and more show up all the time. If you run a very specific piece of Windows-only software, then it might not work for you. But most home-users just surfing the web, checking email, playing music, watching videos on youtube, will get along fine with Linux. To be honest, IF you are a heavy-duty computer gamer, then Linux is not going to work well for you, or if you paid a lot of money for a software package specifically for Windows, it most likely wont run on Linux. Also, if you are a Netflix subscriber, it wont run on Linux. I solved that last one by buying a $60 Roku box and watching Netflix on a LCD TV. The best thing about Linux is that it isnt susceptible to all the viruses, spyware, and trojans out there on the net. I used to boast the same thing about my Mac computers, and for the most part that is STILL true, but the problem is, windows users dont want to spend $1000-$1500 or more to get a virus-free computer. But I think most people can afford 'free' or '$10' to get one. But if you want to keep messing with computers that fail...then please, carry on and ignore this article.

RandyA Unless the scan happened because you told it to run, there was really no scan, that scan looking window IS the virus. do not click on it anywhere. Never ever tell it you want to remove it from a pop up. Run it to install it. Run the installed program, Use the Full scan option. It will clean up most bad things. Yes it takes a long time to run.
Wizard765 Posted August 18, 2012 #11 Posted August 18, 2012 Ok.. you can download it from the previous posts location. You might want to reboot into safe mode with networking. If you do you can "restore" your computer to an earlier time (say the day before you got infected) then reboot into safe mode with networking again. Download and install antimalware and do a full scan. If you restored to an earlier time your virus may not be running so it will be easier for the program to get rid of it. To get into safe mode you start the computer from scratch and tap on the F8 key till you get a black screen with text. Curser to the "safe mode with networking" line and hit enter key.
jfoster Posted August 18, 2012 #12 Posted August 18, 2012 I'm lost like a ball in high weeds with all this....is a touch pad (kindle) at risk to this stuff?
bongobobny Posted August 18, 2012 #13 Posted August 18, 2012 So, ahh, were you really surfing porn sites???
Guest tx2sturgis Posted August 18, 2012 #14 Posted August 18, 2012 I'm lost like a ball in high weeds with all this....is a touch pad (kindle) at risk to this stuff? Its not vulnerable to Windows malware, no. If someone figures out a way to hack into the kindle and derive some benefit, then its possible. I wouldnt lose any sleep over it tho.

Kregerdoodle Posted August 18, 2012 #16 Posted August 18, 2012 I got hit with it yesterday AM, I ran Malwarebytes from Safe mode and it cleaned it. When I turned on my laptop a little while ago, a screen came up that said I had been viewing copy righted material or even child porn and the FBI had locked up my computer. The only way I could get it unlocked was to got to a store that sells the green cards and put $100 on it and use the information to load on to their page and within 1 to 48 hours, my computer would be unlocked. The only way I could get around it was to manually shut down my computer with the on/off button and then when I hit the on button, I held the ESC button until it came up in the safe mode. Venturous Randy Posted August 18, 2012 Author #19 Posted August 18, 2012 Do you have any idea what website infected your computer? No, I have no idea. I just went on Comcast, my provider, and installed the security stuff they offer. I would still like to do a cleanout, but everytime I look at one of the free ones, I can not seem to get past the pay part. RandyA
fixit3546 Posted August 18, 2012 #20 Posted August 18, 2012 Why not install a new, problem-free operating system? Linux Mint or Ubuntu would be my choice. I did the Mepis thing a while back and just didn't understand some of the intricacies of it. I have Ubuntu now (not on this machine) and i love it. still learning though. I recommend it.
RandyR Posted August 18, 2012 #21 Posted August 18, 2012 Two problems here the way I see it. 1. Good computer operating system design should not allow unknowns to download and install anything. (in the name of user friendly....) 2. The open design of the internet with very little accountability just invites this kind of behavior when open tothe world. The internet was designed for a limited number of academics and govt people who know each other to work together .
