Are 1st Gen Choke Switch All The Same?

I thought that all 1st Gen Choke Switch are all the same. Located at the bottom of the switch housing.

 

What years are between Switch Housing and the hand Grip?

I think it was the 1984 and 1985 that the choke lever is mounted vertically between grip and switch housing.

That's good to know, BrianF, because the 1985 parts catalogue I have shows the vertical choke lever as on the 1984. Perhaps they changed during the 1985 production? Some with vertical and some with horizontal?

83's are horizontal.

The bike I have that is titled an 83, but is an early production run 84 model has the vertical lever on it, along with the other 84 changes. Blue color for one.

The only year they made the choke set circular and in front of the grip was in 1984. Some confusion occurs when a 1984 model year VR received a 1983 VIN number. About 300 of the first '84 bikes where shipped in '83, and for some reason received a D in the year designation code of the VIN instead of the E.
