ragtop69gs Posted July 12, 2012 #1 Posted July 12, 2012 My Verizon contract is up and I'm considering switching to Straight Talk smart phones from Walmart. They offer unlimited everything for $45 a month. They also offer Android OS using either GSM or CDMA systems. Verizon is CDMA and they do have the best coverage out there. Does Straight Talk CDMA use the verizon towers ? I'm looking for opinions of Straight Talk cell phone users about how their coverage is with either GSM or CDMA phones when away from the big cities and interstates. My concern is not having a signal while riding the back roads.
pmelah Posted July 12, 2012 #2 Posted July 12, 2012 afried has it and he loves it cdma smart phone thats all i can help with:confused24:
hillrider Posted July 12, 2012 #3 Posted July 12, 2012 verify who the carrier is up there for the smart phones. down here (Atlanta) it isn't verizon or att, I forget who it is now, but their coverage was terrible.
alwrmcusn Posted July 12, 2012 #4 Posted July 12, 2012 Hannah and I have been very satisfied with our Consumer Cellular phones, plans and service for about 7-8 years. Our total monthly charge is about $47-48, two phones, Anywhere 700 plan, no activation, no contract and I believe they use AT&T towers. www.consumercellular.com
timgray Posted July 12, 2012 #5 Posted July 12, 2012 Note on the Android phones, they will be very outdated ones that will never get any software upgrades. and the version of Android on them is useless with a bluetooth helmet, if that matters to you. BUT, it is a lot cheaper. and it uses the AT&T cellular network.
sarges46 Posted July 12, 2012 #6 Posted July 12, 2012 This is pretty good timing for this post! We are looking into picking something up for our travels so the folks back home have a contact for us. Using our own phones are pretty expensive with roaming charges and all. I will watch this to see what we should look for.
sgn Posted July 12, 2012 #7 Posted July 12, 2012 Staight Talk user for 2 years have a very outdated Nokia E71. Using Verizon towers for this phone and have had ZERO problems with connection or dropped calls. While some my say their Droid offerings are also outdated I know from experience because my wife is one of their's it does everything she wants. My "old" Nokia does everything I want, calls, text, internet, blue tooth (works great with Scala Q2 and the Pioneer Radio in my 4Runner) it has the ability to connect my laptop and serve as a modem direct, or to connect via bluetooth and IR. While apps for it's Symbian OS are limited I have found very little that is needed beyond what the phone had installed. Can open and edit Micosoft Office files, read pdf's and print to HP wi-fi printers. As long as this phone works I'll be using it ... Look around on the web and you will find some ST phones are served by different towers. I am not sure where I found it but the model number of the phone tells which carrier will serve it. From what I've read about the rooting of Android phones, being outdated shouldn't pose much of a problem, just install a newer version along with apps to suit you.

Have you been in some of the more off the beaten path areas and still been happy with reception?
