Rear Shock

The rear shock finally died on my 99 Venture. So has anyone bought one recently and if you did I'd like some input on what to purchase and how much money I can expect to pay. Thanks.

At the time I had to replace mine, I went with The Works shock. It was over $600. I wanted to go Hagon but they didn't have the right spring for bigger riders. The Works shock is performing fine, plenty of positive posts about the Hagon as well. There are a couple of other names out there but some, not many good reviews. Hagon and Works seems to be most popular.

I bought a Hagon like 4 months ago. I am def pleased with it. I went with the heavy spring load of the 300kg. There is not a shock out on the market that has a remote loader except the oem spring. I spent right around $500 shipped from the Cali distributor. Last I heard they actually had some instock but that was right around the beginning of the heavy riding season.

 

By the way Hagon was the cheapest I founded shipped out of all of them (works, YSS, OEM, Hagon).

I put a new shock on my 07 a few months ago. Bike had 30k on it at the time. The original shock wasn't leaking, but I assume that shocks wear gradually at first, so gradually that the rider doesn't really notice it until things are bad. Putting the new shock on the bike didn't make a heckuva lot of difference, though, at least not that I could detect from the saddle. So now I've got an older spare shock with 30k on it that I will keep in reserve for the inevitable.

 

I bought the new shock from a mail order dealer out on the west coast. Yamaha Sports Plaza. I've bought a few things from them over the past couple of years. They are dependable and their prices are the lowest I've found anywhere. I seem to recall paying $428 for the shock.

Link Below is another thread with more info/comments on the Hagon. The Hagon comes with a two year unlimited mileage warranty. The shock is rebuildable for $150.00. Christina at Hagon USA in California indicated Hagon is now shipping them the dampers so the rebuilding can be done here. No longer have to ship back to England for rebuild.

 

If you want remote adjustable preload (ie air adjustment) OE yamaha is your only choice. The manual preload adjuster on the Hagon is nice because it uses a set screw to lock it in place. You are not trying to tighten two lock rings. Loosen set screw, turn preload adjuster, tighten set screw. If you remove the left bag there is room to reach the preload adjuster. Having the bike on a lift with weight off the rear wheel would make it easier yet.

 

When I was shopping for the OE shock, 453.00 including the shipping was cheapest I could find (I think that was Yamaha Sports Plaza, 438.00 some else posted plus 17 SH to Cape Coral Fl.). I purchased the Hagon with HD spring for 469.00 Shipped.

I just put a new factory shock on the back of my 2000, a few weeks ago. I needed the air adjustability of the factory unit. Got mine form Partshark for $435 plus $25 (or real close to that) shipping.

 

Handles like a dream again.

I went with the Shock Works and pretty pleased. I'll never have to buy another shock.
