dharnie Posted January 16, 2008 #1 Posted January 16, 2008 Anyone have any problems with cracking of the plastic of the lid after instaklling the chrome metal rack? Reason I ask is the after-market trunk box I bought for my Sabre developed cracks where each hole was drilled into the lid and this Yamaha box appears to be same material - (whether it is or not not sure). I would rather have a box with no cracks and no rack than a box with cracks and a rack!
Freebird Posted January 16, 2008 #2 Posted January 16, 2008 Mine has been on for over 8 years and no cracks yet. I think the key issues are to make sure that the holes are drilled correctly so that no stress is put on it by forcing the bolts in and then not overloading it.
Squidley Posted January 16, 2008 #3 Posted January 16, 2008 Freebird is right on the money, I have had trunk racks on 3 of my last 4 Ventures and used a Kuryakyn bags on them when were touring and I never had any problems. If your concerned about cracking further or want extra support, then run a strip of metal between the upper and lower holes and this will help stiffen the trunk lid up.

SaltyDawg Posted January 16, 2008 #6 Posted January 16, 2008 I guess it would depend on which trunk rack you put on it. From what I have heard the JC Whitney (Show Chrome I think) rack for the venture does have a tendency to crack the lid, mainly because there is no way to spread the load since the legs sit directly on the trunk lid. The Yamaha rack on the other hand has a 1" flat bar going between the front and rear legs spreading the load over a larger area. In either case people also have to remember not to close the trunk and latch it by pushing down on the trunk rack. I have the Yamaha rack on and have had about 30lbs on it for over 2000 miles and it held up just fine. I wouldn't even think about doing that with the other rack.

I see some pics of a black mat on the surface of the lid the same size as rack and legs going through this mat. On other pics I see no mat or no supports going from front to rear leg. if support is on inside of lid I fail to see how that supports a small load on the rack. anyway the most I would consider using it for is a leather bag with some light clothing or as such. otherwise I think the rack adds class but would rather do without if it ruins the lid. but as is mentioned here the yamaha item is ok but beware of after-market. thanks for replies!

It is the only one that has a support strap on both top and bottom to insure total support across all 4 mount points. And I wouldn't mess with the Hopnel trunk pad.

That black mat is a trunk bib and from what I can tell that's purely decoration. I would never consider the after market "Gold Wing" rack for this bike. I believe the inside/outside support straps are a critical element to ensure load distribution. I have used mine for many loads and long trips over 40,000 miles with absolutely no problems. Goose
