So what kind of oil would you suggest for an 06 RSTD? I've read a few things about some syn oil being good at reducing the wine/chip a little and others increasing the whine/chirp.

Thanks in advance.

How fun:) another oil thread, let the games begin:rotf:

OK my personal opinion is if comes out of a fresh container, does not say energy conserving on the can, and is the recommended weight or close to it, you can safely use it.( close to it means 20/40,10/40,15/40,20/50,40,50,60.:backinmyday:)

Oils I have used Valvoline 20/50 Racing

Kendall 20/50 Black label

Shell Rotella 15/40

Chevron Rotella 15/40

Klotz (too expensive for a 3000 mi. oil change IMO)

Kawasaki 10/40

Yamalube 4 stroke 20/40

54K On my last bike and 27k on this one with Shell Rotella t.

That the same stuff Mag1101 is talking about?

Amsoil 10W40.

Change around 7-8K miles.

Amsoil says 9K is okay. Can change your filter half way if you want.

I did bad math and went 13K once, oil was fine.)

(They push 25k on cars if you use their filter)

Current '06 RSTD 88k miles, current '09 RSV 38k miles,

previous R* 54k miles & sold, previous Strat 46k miles and sold.

Not cheap but goes a long ways safely.

Mobil 1 V-Twin Motorcycle 20W-50 Motor Oil Synthetic.

I have tried about all the oils out there, some are noisy, some it's hard to get in and out of gear and so on, I have over 100,000 miles on the bike, it's a 2002 and the bike runs great. I change the oil about once a year.

Hope this helps

Oil's all changed and had a little test ride. The Rotella T 15-40 seems to work fine so far, no noticeable difference. Well, it seems to run a little smoother but that's probably all in my head. If anything it might RIDE a little smoother because I adjusted the suspension and filled the tires. Long ride tomorrow (about 108 miles and 2.5 hrs) so we will she how she handles.

I ran the Rotella in my previous RSTD and it seemed to do really well. From my experiments thicker oil like 20w50 made the whine worse.

I run 20/50 Amsoil all the time in my 99 venture when I had it and now in my 2006 venture and my whine got less. Depends on what type of whine you have . it has worked great for me for well over 100000 miles on both bikes

Good luck .

Long ride huh???:no-no-no::stirthepot::stirthepot::stirthepot:

Once you get used to that bike, you'll find that 100 miles will be a short ride... :cool10::cool10::cool10:

92,500 on my 01 RSV and I have been using Rotella 15 40 for 3 yrs now, change every 5,000 miles with new filter, I also use Honda oil filter, it is the same filter as the Venture, (check the part number on the box) and it is half the price. Oil change and filter run me 18.00 bucks.:stirthepot:

Yamalube, new filter and the $2.00 crush washer every 3000 , use a torque wrench to tighten up the bolt to specs. After my 5 years I will probably switch to the rotella, thats what I used on the 89

I have not looked at that can real close but I believe that multi grade oils down in 5w range are usually energy conserving and have additives that may make your clutch slip. They also do not have as high a zinc content which is important for longer engine life.
