hunter 1500 Posted June 22, 2012 #1 Posted June 22, 2012 I've noticed oil on the tip of my kickstand. Anyone else had this? I just figure it is from some breather tube that comes out there. Anything I should be concerned with?
raybear71 Posted June 22, 2012 #2 Posted June 22, 2012 Maybe you parked in a spot previously used by a Harley.:rotf:
TwoStars Posted June 22, 2012 #3 Posted June 22, 2012 (edited) I found the same thing, but only during a recent cross-country trip. Normally don't see it. I also assumed it was from the breather tubes.I keep my oil at the 1/3 to 1/2 level in the sight glass. Edited June 22, 2012 by TwoStars
Gary N. Posted June 22, 2012 #4 Posted June 22, 2012 I think you'll find that your rear valve cover is leaking. My bike has the oilly kick stand as well and I've traced it up to the valve cover.
XV1100SE Posted June 22, 2012 #5 Posted June 22, 2012 Over the past two days I've noticed the same thing on my '09 RSV. A drop of oil on the flat part of the side stand. Haven't had a chance to trace it down yet. Planning on looking at it tonight after work. Doesn't happen when the stand is down. Seems to happen while riding and when I put the stand down.... there it is.

GaryZ Posted June 22, 2012 #7 Posted June 22, 2012 I found oil on my kick stand after switching to synthetic oil. It was a very small leak around the wiring grommets. I changed to Rotella-T, as recommended on this forum, and have not seen any oil since.
GeorgeS Posted June 22, 2012 #8 Posted June 22, 2012 My 89 started same thing, around 25,000 miles, I re-sealed the rear case cover, several times, replaced the Brass O-Ring on the bottom, bolt, checked everything several times, and around 35,000 I just gave up on it. Its still leaks, the same at 89,000 miles as when it started !!! Best fix, is just forget about it, and go for a ride !! :whistling:

easternrider Posted June 22, 2012 #10 Posted June 22, 2012 My 84 does the same thing, but it is only since I replaced the pick up coil. I didn't have a replacement gasket, and ripped the one I had. I used some silicone around the tear, but now it leaks a bit
TwoStars Posted June 22, 2012 #11 Posted June 22, 2012 I made my assessment in a Motel 6 parking lot, 2000 miles from home. I'll take a closer look over the weekend.
etcswjoe Posted June 22, 2012 #12 Posted June 22, 2012 The freeze plug on mine started leaking and I thought it was oil at first.
Brake Pad Posted June 23, 2012 #13 Posted June 23, 2012 Seems we all have a Yama-Davidson, I found oil also, but can't find where its coming from. (Just a gritty base on the kick stand)
hunter 1500 Posted June 23, 2012 Author #14 Posted June 23, 2012 Put it up on the jack last night and it comes from the breather tube. Seems to happen more on long warm rides. Thanks for the reply's, even the smart ones.

V7Goose Posted June 23, 2012 #16 Posted June 23, 2012 This is mostly normal - it comes from the crank case breather via the air plenum drain tubes, and I have covered it in great detail in several of my older threads. A couple of quick points - if you overfill the crankcase, it will do it much more. But any 2nd gen will show this after several days of hard long riding, even with the perfect amount of oil. Over time, you will also tend to see lots of oily dirt collecting around the #1 carb - it is from the same source, and it caused primarily by a design flaw in the placement of the drain in the left plenum. Ozlander Posted June 23, 2012 #18 Posted June 23, 2012 My first bike was a '57 Harley. I've never worried about oil leaks since.
