What are you wanting to do? Specifically, how many miles are you wanting to do comfortably in a day?

From my experience:

Up to 200 miles in a day - stock

200-300 - add a pad, beads, or sheepskin

300-500 - Butler mod (and possibly a pad, beads, or sheepskin)

500-1000+ - Russell Day Long

Just did 1800+ miles in 36 hours with a RDL. Total for the weekend was 2450 Friday to Sunday. Butt is ready for more but the brain needs sleep and the checkbook (and the boss) needs work.

As always with seats, YMMV.

I'm on my 4th seat conversion looking for that magic butt solution myself.

Original seat was the Midnight studded seats

Next was the Rick Bulter mod done by Rick

Next was a stock pillow top

Current seat is the stock Midnight with a high density foam added.

Like a couple others here my butt bones would start aching after 2-300 miles. Rick's seat mod for me was too soft and I felt like I was bottoming out much like the stock seat did. The pillow top was an improvement but not by much. Last week I took the cover off and removed the foam Rick uses. I could see then why I bottomed out so easily as it compresses next to nothing. I use an exercise pad purchased from either Walmart or KMart (forget which at the moment) for the arm rest pads I make. It's about a 1/2" thick, high denisity grey foam. For the arm rests I use 2 layers.

Ok back to seats -- I removed the foam Rick uses and installed the grey pad foam, shaped it to the seat and reinstalled the cover. WOW what a difference that made. I think this mod will solve my seat/butt issuses now. I've only done some local rides so far so haven't had any long distance trials yet. I'm hoping to take a 3 day trip as soon as I get time & a weather break here. Then I'll report back on my seat mod. The next step would be a Russll Daylong seat perhaps.

the choices are , road sofa, corbin, mustang, write in. I need opinons thanks.

The answers were interesting.....but, too bad that $$$ keeps popping up.

Has anyone done an a/b comparison of the stock '03 seat and subsequent years' pillow tops? (I'm not sure what year they made it "fluffier" looking.....but our '03 looks pretty plain in comparison.....and I've always considered it a bit of a nut cracker. You know.....that jamming into the tank sensation!?!?)

I'd love to hear that the "pillow top" is at least 25% softer/longer/whatever than the 03....so I could just get one at the wreckers. But if Japan was more concerned about making it just LOOK more comfortable.....rather than actually BEING more comfortable, then I guess I'd better get out the wallet.

I ride a Russel Day Long. I can ride ALL DAY LONG (have done 15hr's in the saddle) with zero discomfort. This seat came on the bike from PO so I can't compare it to stock or anything else. On other bikes I have ridden Stock, and Corbin and tried various pads. The Russell is the only seat I've ever had that I have no discomfort, no matter how long a ride.

Caveat Emptor: everyones butt is different, so YMMV.

For some folks softer is not better. Yamaha's stock seats are all soft, Every one of them I've ever ridden causes me pain after about an hour. The firmer the better (up to a point) for me. Corbins are relatively firm and I did much better with them. Now on a Russell and it lives up to it's name (Day Long) for me.

+1 for the RDL. I've not lived a LOT of years yet. But I lived several, and I've never seen a bad comment about Russell (except the cost). Owned Mustang, Corbin, and 2 others (can't remember the names) - RDL

If money is not an option, I would try the Russel Day Long. Every person I have talked to that have used one love them, Corbin is a crap shoot, some love them, some dont.

I tried the Corbin also. Too hard. I found a Mustang just right for my Nomad. Now if they just made them for the RSV I would be happy. Had to take my seat apart in 06 and redo it. Basically removed the top pieces of fluffy foam and replaced it with high quality carpet pad . Worked real good .

I purchased a Mustang seat a few weeks ago and really like it. I tried the Butler Mod (he does a great job) but after a while it did break down and was just too soft for me. I altered another non pillow top seat with firmer padding but was still too soft and could not get the shape right. The Mustang was firmer than stock and was comfortable from the start. It sits a little higher than the stock seat but I prefer that. I did 500 miles the other day with a couple hour break in the middle to see some friends and I do stop every couple of hours for just a few minutes. I've come to the conclusion that I'm just not as young as I used to be and can't ride as long as I did when I was young.

I purchased mine from a local place that gives 20% off of Mustang seats. I got the one with studs and a backrest for $584. plus tax. (No shipping) For me, I just couldn't do the cost of the Day Long at this time and am very pleased with the Mustang.

Special thanks to Sleeperhawk for answering all my questions about his experience with his Mustang seat.

I have a stock seat and a Butler mod seat. Try a seat pad from Wal mart for $20. they are ln the auto department next to the seat covers. It can work for the drivers seat or passenger.

I have tried many different seat makers and Russell it the best seat you can get because they make the seat to fit YOU.... not another companys idea of what you want in a seat.

Thanks, Spike.

Now to the sorrowful/unfortunate question........how much ARE these Day Long babies.......and is there someplace to get at LEAST a LITTLE break on the price?

Mike.....They are NOT cheap, they are custom fitted for your height and weight. The website has it in the $600 range for leather, but arguably could be the last seat you ever buy...

On my previous bike a 07 900 Vulcan I had a Mustang with the removable drivers backrest. I could ride all day 12+ and have. I now have just the OEM Pillow top job but so far it seems plenty good. My Mustang ran me in the Mid 500 range.

One can be had in vinyl for $480. Goes up from there.

They have an 8mo comfort guarantee as well. Have not done any business with them as mine came on the bike.

The only time you will buy another seat after owning an RDL is if you get another bike.

Best money spent on the Venture (outside of the Carbon1 lift adapter with legs).

Wife and I are breaking in a Russell on our RSTD. So far so good. Much improved over stock for both of us, but pricey.

I tried every device out there and then some to make my ride more comfortable...The closest I came was a air type cushion but even that got uncomfortable on long trips..

Finally I decided to "bite the bullet" and get a Russell Day Long Seat...Yes it's pricey but in my opinion worth every penny I paid for it...This is the first times in over 30 years that I have ridden with nothing between my fanny and the seat, don't need one anymore...

I just took a 2000 mile round trip (in April) to Phoenix and the seat was comfortable the whole time....

Gotta ask. What about the passengers comfort? 90% of my riding is with the Mrs. aboard. And we know if she's not happy no one is.:rasberry:
