Pernese Posted June 14, 2012 #1 Posted June 14, 2012 On a 1st gen, how do you determine which ismk1 or mk2? Mine is 85 VR.
Scooter Bob Posted June 14, 2012 #2 Posted June 14, 2012 I'm no 1'st gen expert, but among other things, the MK1's have the diamondy looking saddlebags, where the MK2's are more rectangular and top loading.
Wizard765 Posted June 14, 2012 #3 Posted June 14, 2012 Yours is a Mk1 The Mk1 is 83 84 and 85 Mk2 starts in 86 and goes to 92 (93 in some areas)
Pernese Posted June 14, 2012 Author #4 Posted June 14, 2012 My saddlebags are side loaders. I noticed Skydocs clutch upgrades for 1st gen are different for mk1 or mk2 and wondered if there were other differences.
Pernese Posted June 14, 2012 Author #5 Posted June 14, 2012 Thanks wizard. All this time I thought 1st gen ended with 85.

Yammer Dan Posted June 14, 2012 #7 Posted June 14, 2012 MK1 is the Baddest of the Bad!!! All downhill from there...
dingy Posted June 14, 2012 #8 Posted June 14, 2012 My saddlebags are side loaders. I noticed Skydocs clutch upgrades for 1st gen are different for mk1 or mk2 and wondered if there were other differences. 83-85 (MKI) clutchs are the Barnett style with 6 helical springs. 86-93 (MKII) are a diagphram style spring. Clutch cover is different. There are a lot of differences from MKI to MKII 1200 - 1300 motor Saddlebags & trunk totally different Headlight Brakes Carbs - mainly venturi size Mufflers This is a few of the main differences Gary
bikenut Posted June 14, 2012 #9 Posted June 14, 2012 Your 85 also has a larger trunk then the 83 & 84. 85 was when Yamaha was playing around with larger side bags and trunck and yours was the first changesdone to it. 86 they came out with the same as yours but the larger side bags and top loading non-removable, Hope this helps
