Snaggletooth Posted June 10, 2012 #1 Posted June 10, 2012 Geesh, I'm at it again. Onto another odd project. Before I get into what I'm going to try do this time I thought I'd check and see if anybody has access to any scraps of heat shrink tubing in a diameter of 2" with a wall thickness of around .045. I figure a piece about 6" long would let me find out if this is workable or not. A few pieces would give me some room for failure. (I'm betting on that) Just thought I'd shake the cage to see if anyone had some short ones laying around before I order a chunk from McMaster-Carr just to find out my idea don't work. Like everybody has 2" shrink tubing laying around right? Mike
pmelah Posted June 10, 2012 #2 Posted June 10, 2012 i would send you some but what i got is a little on the used side crinkly and old would that work lol i only have a 1 inch piece left from my roll i need to order more for work
Bubber Posted June 10, 2012 #3 Posted June 10, 2012 I think I have a length of 1" also it was in a kit from HF I bought. Any help?????
Snaggletooth Posted June 10, 2012 Author #4 Posted June 10, 2012 Appreciate the offer but the 2" is about minimum for diameter and it looks like at least 3.5" is the minimum length. I'm not sure how much shrinkage I'm going to see on the length during the heating process but it shouldn't be too much. What I'm trying to find out is if the shrink tubing will hold it's shape and how durable it will be after being heated over a form and slipped off to be used as a protective sleeve on a device. Always something to play with. Mike
Bubber Posted June 10, 2012 #5 Posted June 10, 2012 If I remember correctly (not a sure thing) shrink tube shrinks 40% or more. if you shrink it over something round and don't shrink it to it;s max it will probably hold its shape. Not sure how much protection this stuff has other than on wires. Just for giggles I look to see what I have and get back to you if I have something that will work.
Eck Posted June 10, 2012 #6 Posted June 10, 2012 Not sure what your project is but would one of these products be usable for what you are doing? I thought of this stuff as I was reading your posting: http://www.bing.com/images/search?q=brush+on+rubber+coating&view=detail&id=A94D04CAA5B1FAE2C0E437723B75079783DB29DB&first=91 Then I thought of this stuff, but again, I dont know what your project is. http://www.plastidip.com/hme_solutions/Plasti_Dip
dacheedah Posted June 10, 2012 #7 Posted June 10, 2012 Find a phone guy working on a box or a line or maybe a com ed guy, I bet they toss tons of those scraps
Marcarl Posted June 10, 2012 #8 Posted June 10, 2012 I have some here, but it's about 1.5", hard to measure, but not big enough for you. It shrinks 40% and we use it to rubberize wooden broom handles so that a corn broom with a wooden handle will pass meat inspection. It does a very nice job, so nice in fact that the inspectors wondered where we got those handles,,,, go figure.

Both those products have been used a lot over the years on the bikes and do very well. The spray version of the Pasticdip gets used a lot around here. Mike
