Generally, the last four or five digits reflect the serial number of production, but sometimes it don't start at "0". More often starts with "000101" (1983-1986) or "010001" (1987) or even "033101" (1990). Also, there is the 1983½ Venture that changes things up a bit. Although they (the 1983½) had "DA" in the VIN denoting the year 1983, they started serial numbering with "000101" again. To differentiate a 1983 DA 000101 and a 1983½ DA 000101, look at the digits after "JYA" in the VIN. The 1983 DA 000101 will start with either "31M" (denoting a Royale) or "26H" (denoting a Standard). The 1983½ DA will start with "47T" (denoting a Royale) or "47R" (denoting a Standard). A "true" 1984 VIN will start with either "41V" (Royale) or "41R" (Standard) and will have "EA" as the year designation as opposed to "DA".

That was everything I needed to know. Ever since reading Skydoc's info on the early 83's having the same gear ratio as the v-max I have been asking sellers on ebay for vin info. I just scored the rear drive out of this bike for $45. JY31M00XDA001038, According to the info you gave this is what i've been searching for. I do know these are not as heavy duty as the vmax and fjr drives, but I only use my bike for commuting to work and back(30 miles each way of highway riddled with stop lights).

This helps clarify the 83 1/2 I bought a couple of months ago.
