tz89 Posted May 25, 2012 Share #1 Posted May 25, 2012 I'm getting a little oily on the bottom of my speedo cable. What could be leaking from that? Any particular fix suggested? Here's a pic. http://db.tt/LkvwHh7f
mbrood Posted May 25, 2012 Share #2 Posted May 25, 2012 I would take a careful look at the fork seals.
bongobobny Posted May 25, 2012 Share #3 Posted May 25, 2012 Yup!! The speedo housing is dry sans any grease that was put into it, and the speedo gear box on the wheel is also just packed with some grease, no pressure on it. ditto for the front axle and bearings. It does look like light weight oil such as fork oil, or also look for hydraulic brake leak but you should feel a certain amount of fade if that is the case... tz89 Posted May 25, 2012 Author Share #4 Posted May 25, 2012 (edited) It's a mystery for sure. Seals look okay - no tell-tale oil ring above. No fade on the brakes but this was my initial fear. When I wipe it off it comes off black, black, black. After a few days it's back. Nothing else near it (above it) shows any. It's like a light coating not a lot of quantity. Is there something nearby that could be dripping fork oil? I am really reaching - could something come down inside the cable? I haven't done any work like lube it or anything. Not ready to blame gremlins yet. Edited May 26, 2012 by tz89
MiCarl Posted May 25, 2012 Share #5 Posted May 25, 2012 It almost has to be fork oil. Brake fluid would be all over the caliper too. The fork oil drain is visible in the top of your picture, check that. There is also a bolt into the damping rod through the bottom that could be leaking. I just had a V-max in my shop that had oil on the bottom of the fork but not up at the seals. Assumed it was the damping rod bolt. Turned the thing had been down in a previous life and a crack had opened on the wheel side of the lower tube.
tz89 Posted May 26, 2012 Author Share #6 Posted May 26, 2012 (edited) Just went out to check. The drain screw doesn't seem the culprit. I checked the bottom of the fork - nope. And yet it is coming from somewhere. I checked up the cable to see if it was coming from above and only pooling at the bottom. The cable is dry except for the bottom 8 inches or so. hmmmm... I'm really reaching now - could something come down the inside of the cable? I haven't done any work like lube the cable. But I'm not ready to blame gremlins yet. alvald83 Posted May 26, 2012 Share #7 Posted May 26, 2012 My speedo cable does the same thing. It's almost as though it is missing an o-ring or something. I would wipe mine clean, go for a short ride to see where it was coming from just to find out it was coming from the speedo cable. Mine started just after I lubed the cable. It has slowed down to almost gone until I lube it again.
friesman Posted May 26, 2012 Share #8 Posted May 26, 2012 Mabbe leave your speedo cable unhooked overnight and let it hang down. Check for drips in morning, mabbe someone did overlube the cable, its unlikely bur possible. Brian

Marcarl Posted May 26, 2012 Share #10 Posted May 26, 2012 Just rinse it off with plain water,,,, if it cleans up, it's brake fluid, if it stays there it's an oil.
