treecol Posted May 20, 2012 #1 Posted May 20, 2012 Can you tell me how often to change the oil on the Midnight Venture 2008? Also are the tappets (valves) manually adjusted or automatically? Thanks, just trying to get an idea of the maintenence, ie if I can do it myself.
M61A1MECH Posted May 20, 2012 #2 Posted May 20, 2012 Maintenance intervals (oil changes) will depend on whether you are running regular oil or synthetic oil. Regular oil: Change oil and filter about every 3,000 to 4000 miles. Synthetic oil: (what I do others mysuggest diferntly) change the filter every 3000 miles and change the oil every 6000 miles. Do not over fill the crank case, properlevel isjustbelow the half way point in the sight window with the bike standing straight up. Rearend fluid is changed every 16,000 miles. Coolant is changed every 26,000 miles or every 2 two years. See the tech section on this web site for a clever way to get the fluid out of the engine cavities with out making a mess. Valves are shim and bucket type, no tappets to adjust, you must have a special tool to compress the springs and a set of shims on hand to swap out as required to get the proper clearance. Copies of the ownwer's manual are available from the Yamaha web site.
darthandy Posted May 20, 2012 #3 Posted May 20, 2012 (edited) ...to your friendly, neighbourhood mad house! You'll enjoy dealing with the inmates! The oil (and filter) should be changed every 12 months or 8,000 miles (13,000 km). Valve clearances need to be checked every 28,000 miles (43,000 km). It's possible to do it yourself but it can be a somewhat tricky job if you are not used to this type of mechanical work. This link http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=1828 should take you to the Technical Library section, where you may download both the owner's manual and a service manual. As well, a search of the forum will often bring up descriptions as to how others have performed various tasks. Enjoy! Andy Oops ... took too long to type! Here's a better answer yet!
