I was wondering if anyone knows of a replacement or some way to replace the top half of the CB antenna. I have 2 friends missing the top piece above the black part. Is it possible to make up something that will work or find a place that sells just that part?

Yep you could try an old car radio antenna. It will need to be the right diameter. Then you will need to cut it to the correct length with some room for adjustment within the loading coil. Make final tests and adjustments using a SWR meter.

Ask them if they had considered switching to a fire stick or similar it would be better performance.

I found a replacement piece at Pep Boys. Just cut it to length (don't remember the exact length) and lightly sand the base to make it fit better into the black center load. If using the CB, you'll need to get and SWR meter to make the final adjustments.

Maybe more cost effective to buy a new antenna, you'll know it's going to work right, less driving around to find one long enough and the right diameter and they won't loose the top end again. They lost the top in the first place because the screw got loose, so what's going to stop the screw from coming loose again. It didn't necessarily back out, chances are the business end of the screw wore down and so released the stick.

Wizard,

My experience has been that they don't fall out, they break off. I had to take the coil apart and push out the broken piece that was still in there. It wasn't a big deal to get it out.

The rod that you want is 2mm (.080) in diameter and 500mm (19.7) long. You can get a piece of music wire at any decent hobby shop. I see that you live in Caledonia. Performance Hobbies in Webster or Dan's Crafts and Things will have what you want for a couple of dollars.

Install the wire with 465mm exposed. You may want to bend a small loop at the end just in case somebody tries to poke themselves.

Find a cb shop they should have the replacement tip and will set the swr for you usually at a modest charge. But don't let them do anything else to your cb unless you know there work. Lots of shade tree tech's out there. 10-4
