Guest Doc_R Posted October 27, 2006 #1 Posted October 27, 2006 Hi All, I have a luggage rack on my 04 Venture. Problem is the acorn nuts that secure it are scratching the crap out of our (mine and wife's) helmets. Anyone know how to stop this or fix it? Thanks, Doc_R
PEIslander Posted October 27, 2006 #2 Posted October 27, 2006 Doc_R I've got the same problem with my 84 and I just put my gloves on top of the helmet before I close the lid. I tried some foam tape but it wouldn't stay stuck so I settled for the gloves. There must be a better way though.
BMW Posted October 27, 2006 #3 Posted October 27, 2006 You can try replacing the original screws with button head socket cap screws which have a lower profile.
juggler Posted October 28, 2006 #4 Posted October 28, 2006 Try covering the nuts with felt or a thin piece of rubber.
WilCruise Posted October 28, 2006 #5 Posted October 28, 2006 Have the same problem. Been thinking about putting some of that stuff... ahhh... what is it... Plastidip?? on it. It's stuff you can coat your tool handles with, Dries like a rubbery plastic coat. Yeah, I think it's Plastidip. You can get it in the paint section at the home improvement centers. I've used it for similar problems and it's worked well.
Jercoupe Posted October 28, 2006 #6 Posted October 28, 2006 hey doc: I just installed a rack and had the same problem so I went down to the hardware store and got some metric panhead screws instead of the hex heads that came with the rack. I also stuck some of the soft half of a velcro discs over the screws. works. Jack in Los Osos ca
saddlebum Posted October 28, 2006 #7 Posted October 28, 2006 had the same problem. replaced the bolts with large head diameter dome type torx screws then contact cemented a sheet of 1/4 inch high density foam to the under side of the lid.

Guest VenturaCowboy Posted October 29, 2006 #9 Posted October 29, 2006 The trunk hinges are what scratch my helmets (mostly the passenger since I'm usually wearing mine). The helmet ends up coming into contact with the hinge and then vibration does quite a number on it. I haven't quite figured out how to stop that other than keeping the helmet covered with an old tshirt. But it sure was sad to see that big gouge on the side of a brand new HJC when it first happened.
RoadKill Posted October 30, 2006 #10 Posted October 30, 2006 We purchased some pillow cases, flannel, at a garage sale and use those. nice and soft and if you ever need it you have extra rags! Put the helmets in the pillow case when not it use.
venturejockey Posted November 1, 2006 #11 Posted November 1, 2006 Helmets? What helmets? We don't need no stinkin' helmets!
BEER30 Posted November 1, 2006 #12 Posted November 1, 2006 I place an extra cleaning/wipe down rag over my riders helmet . As well as some adhesive backed loop velcro over the bolt heads under the rack . Gene
VTirelli Posted November 9, 2006 #13 Posted November 9, 2006 Ummmmmmmmm I put the helmets in upside down. I always have a rag of sweatshirt in the trunk, so I don't have to worry about the bottome scratching it.
Kregerdoodle Posted May 10, 2007 #14 Posted May 10, 2007 Hi All, I have a luggage rack on my 04 Venture. Problem is the acorn nuts that secure it are scratching the crap out of our (mine and wife's) helmets. Anyone know how to stop this or fix it? Thanks, Doc_R I have not done this yet but plan on it, I have only had my bike for a week, so still checking everything out. I plan on getting a thin foam, much like what is in the bottom of the trunk, and useing 3m spray adhesive to stick it to the inside lid of the trunk. It has allready scratched my wifes helmet up pretty good.. I`ll let all know how this turns out. K
Kregerdoodle Posted May 15, 2007 #15 Posted May 15, 2007 Folks, first off, sorry for no picks, I should have them up in a few days. I bought a 12in x 11in sheet of "Fun Foam" in the craft Dept of Wally World, it has a peel and stick backing on it and can be cut with scissors to fit what you want. it is only about 1/8 in thick and think it is going to do the job.... I will post pics in a few days, waiting for my Dish Network hook up, as I am on dial up right now, and won`t live long enough to up-load pics...
Condor Posted May 15, 2007 #16 Posted May 15, 2007 I just drape a micro-cell rag over the top of mine....
plainmd Posted May 15, 2007 #17 Posted May 15, 2007 I put rtv on the nuts of my trunk lid...Works great.
RSTDinPA Posted May 15, 2007 #18 Posted May 15, 2007 Simply cut a small lenght of rubber tubing and fit it over the acorn nuts leaving enough extra to form a cushion. Hope this helps.
Eck Posted May 15, 2007 #19 Posted May 15, 2007 You can use a tire patch......and patch glue.... Put the patch on your helmet covering the scratches.....and glue it on...... ha........ Cut down a pair of those rubber eraser tips they put on pencils......and put on the nuts
Gearhead Posted May 15, 2007 #20 Posted May 15, 2007 I plan to put thin automotive carpeting on the inside of my trunk. In the meantime I put a towel over the helmet in the trunk. Learned the hard way, but 'twas an old helmet at least. Jeremy
