Trader Posted May 7, 2012 #1 Posted May 7, 2012 OK so it was bound to happen. My 88 collector, which had been repaired by the PO rotted out at the weld. I have it all unbolted and I have the new(used) one ready to go in. BUT....How can I get the front headers off without removing the rad etc. From this thread it looks like I should be able to. http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=1002 But I don't see how it's possible. it doesn't look like you can move the header far enough forward to get it out because the rad is in the way...and I can't move the rad without draining it because the lower hose is too restrictive. Any suggestions?
Marcarl Posted May 7, 2012 #2 Posted May 7, 2012 If memory serves me correctly,,,, if you loosen the rad you can then loosen the front headers enough to do the job. The rad is held in place with 4 screws, so wouldn't take a lot to find out. You only need enough room to be able to lower the collector so that the bracket clears the oil pan.
Flyinfool Posted May 7, 2012 #3 Posted May 7, 2012 If you get it welded up again, pay the little bit extra to have them use all stainless steel parts and welding wire. Like the factory did.
Trader Posted May 7, 2012 Author #4 Posted May 7, 2012 I did manage to move the rad enough to get the collector out. I got an almost new one from a member here last year...so I'm getting it put back in. About half way done on the reinstall now. (Yes I work VERY slowly)

Trader Posted May 7, 2012 Author #6 Posted May 7, 2012 If I could find all the parts again :confused24:I'd be sailing right along! I keep stealing nuts and bolts off my 83...it's supposed to be a project bike...not a parts bike! but should have it all put back together tonight.
