Guest tx2sturgis Posted May 9, 2012 #26 Posted May 9, 2012 This was a there-n-back ironbutt to Balmorhea; 550 miles there, 550 miles back. Dave Now the question is...WHY?
Dave77459 Posted May 9, 2012 #27 Posted May 9, 2012 Now the question is...WHY? I wanted to qualify for the Mile Eater program from the IBA. I'd ridden several ironbutts but had only bothered to document one. You need 2+ for Mile Eater, and I had a day free, so... why not? As far as lack of reported vibration...? I thought he came from a V-Twin, which have as much vibration when running good as mine does when running out of sync. I usually tell it was out of sync only after syncing it. It just runs so purely beautifully when it is in sync. Dave

Hey an IB run is ok if thats your thing....I've had a few invites but just have no interest. Traveling from point A to point B with little time to rest, eat, or sight-see, and keeping receipts for verification: Sounds exactly like what I do for a living and I dont want to do it for pleasure.... I used to pick up freight in Balmorhea and there aint much out there...main reason I asked why. As far as vibration and carb synching. Although not all carb synch problems will be apparent with a vibration issue, I'm thinking that if one cylinder is running so weakly that it could cause a power problem, then the rider should be able to feel some sort of vibration when rolling on the power. But you are right, coming off a V-Twin, he might not notice it. But of course I could be wrong...its happened before. Once.
yuckly Posted May 9, 2012 Author #29 Posted May 9, 2012 another theory was "diaphragms". not sure what they are, but that is what one of the guys at the shop said...
Dave77459 Posted May 9, 2012 #30 Posted May 9, 2012 By the way Dave, glad your doing ok after the recent unfortunate events out there for ya. Thanks. Got my bad days with my good, like most everyone else. Hey an IB run is ok if thats your thing....I've had a few invites but just have no interest. Traveling from point A to point B with little time to rest, eat, or sight-see, and keeping receipts for verification: Sounds exactly like what I do for a living and I dont want to do it for pleasure.... I usually do my ironbutt runs for a purpose. Most often, I am flying my wife somewhere and I ride to meet her, where the vacation starts. I can make 1500 miles in a day or two, and she used to be limited to 300 miles, so saving 3 days of vacation is a big deal. Then there is the "ride to Lubbock for lunch with the kids" thing. Lubbock did have the 10th best burger in Texas, or so it was claimed. I should have known better, since the hack magazine was written out of Austin. I used to pick up freight in Balmorhea and there aint much out there...main reason I asked why. Wasn't even a decent cafe when I went through. But it was fun to see everyone gathering at the post office to get their mail. It was a community time, nice to see. As far as vibration and carb synching. But of course I could be wrong...its happened before. Once. Dave
RSTDdog Posted May 9, 2012 #31 Posted May 9, 2012 another theory was "diaphragms". not sure what they are, but that is what one of the guys at the shop said... If it was leaking, overflowing gas, it probably did that before. Fuel tends to muck up the carbs worse on the left (side stand side) of the bike, and old varnished gas can run toward the rubber diaphragm and make it stick to the cover, keeping the slide from pulling open when you open the throttle. There are also air jets under the cover where the diaphragms are and if those are clogged, the diaphragm and slide wont respond correctly to the vacuum/pressure changes when the throttle is opened. Lots of possibilities. Glad to hear they will look into for you and try to fix it. You are entitled to a properly running bike. RSTDdog
RSTDdog Posted May 9, 2012 #32 Posted May 9, 2012 The tank was completely full (I have punched holes in the filler neck) and I was riding unencumbered by trailer or pillion. I was going 75-ish mph, because the speed limit was 80mph and I didn't want to get run down. I think the big difference was the 40+ mph headwind. I did say it was a strong headwind, right? Dave Well I haven't ridden in a 40 mph head wind and I'm unlikley to try and see if I get 15mpg if I burn up a tank at 115 mph (should be roughly the same as 75 + 40 wind ??) I don't doubt you, but that still seems like a drastic drop in MPG to me for just speed and wind. You run a stock shield or do you have an oversize (clearview, etc) ? I know people have reported losing a few mpg with the big wide clearview shield in normal conditions. RSTDdog

yuckly Posted May 9, 2012 Author #34 Posted May 9, 2012 thanks for all the ideas and suggestions!! I will keep you posted on the verdict if I do get one.... I look forward to meeting those of you who are close and if the bike is still acting up, i would be interested to see what ya'll think the problem is. sincerely
yuckly Posted May 20, 2012 Author #35 Posted May 20, 2012 picked up the bike on friday and it is SCREAMIN'! Night and day difference!! They re-jetted the carbs and change the plugs, no charge. I have soooo much throttle and there is no more pogoing effect in wind or otherwise. props to Mike and Wilmington Honda. THanks for all of your responses and ideas for fixes. ride safe!
