It has been setting out side under a cover for 5 years - that's a crime in my book!previous owner rode it 4 times last 2 years. said he had it dealer serviced march 06 and again in march 07. fluids are fine I put new battery, new plugs, it would not start. dumped old gas and new high octane, by-passed fuel filter, fuel pump works. pulled carbs and cleaned corrosion, cleaned and blew out all jets, needles, orifaces. first try and it started right up!! can accelerate if choke closed But quits if open choke the least bit. But the right front cyl (#4?) is cold. Should I pull the carbs again? never did find anything broken or clogged in carbs, but all the brass was tarnished from moisture intrusion I presume. Anyone can you please help me out here? Very anxious to get it running!!

RedRider Posted January 8, 2008 #6 Posted January 8, 2008 Seafoam is a magic elixer that solves all motorcycle engine problems!! Actually, it is a good fuel system cleaner that has proven itself in solving minor, fuel related issues. Cheap insurance to run a can thru every 5 or 10 tanks. Just put a whole can in an empty tank and top off with fuel. Don't worry about the instructions (calls for a few oz. per tank) - dump the whole thing in there. My guess is that it will not solve the issue you have. Check the coil and wires. If you have a garage, turn off all the lights, look down where the plug wires are, and crank it. You will be looking for sparks between the wires and the engine case. You never know what critter was chewing on those wires while it was sitting outside. Sound like you are close to having a great bike with a lot of life left in it. Welcome to the VentureRider family. RR

Very anxious to get it running!! if it didn't start, after you put in new plugs, it is possible that #4cyl flooded. if that plug is "wet", or has been fouled, it probably won't ever fire again. i would pull it out and check it for spark. oh, and welcome to our house!!!! just jt
dharnie Posted January 9, 2008 Author #10 Posted January 9, 2008 follow-up pulled #4 plug out and it fired - so that eliminated electronics took the 4 carb unit off a working Venture, put it on subject Venture and it fired right up! runs as good as a Cadillac! now have to either try rebuild carbs again or find good used ones - I am sure new Mikuni carbs will cost some big bucks! Will use good "borrowed" carbs until others are replaced or fixed. Hope to test ride it tomorrow or next day after work. I will be riding it this weekend for sure! HA! HA! Will get some sea foam. I have been using Marvel Mystery Oil in gas, crank case and transmissions on my cars for years. If prevents and fixes. After 1,000 mi using it in ford v8 it freed lifter and ran quiet. prevented expensive trans rebuilds on 2 my cars and my brothers. cleans & keeps injectors in good shape. I would put it in the gas but NEVER - NOT - in the crank case on any bike that uses engine oil in trans. If #4 is flooding sounds like float bowl adjustment? Any ideas on new vs used vs rebuilding the old one or ones? Thanks for ideas

Cougar Posted January 9, 2008 #14 Posted January 9, 2008 I had the same problem about six months ago, # 2 ANd #4 were fouling plugs -way to rich. after removing my carbs I found that all my floats were out to lunch with all differant hights. I also replace all four low idle set screws as well. now my plugs ALL FOUR look awesome. This floats were factory set that way. Just thought I would share that with you. there is no need to by new carbs. you can adjust and replace parts yourself. Before I did all this to my carbs I must have ran 12 cans of SeaFoam nothing helped until I looked into them. I still use SeaFoam In Everything I use though.. dharnie Posted January 9, 2008 Author #15 Posted January 9, 2008 Cougar - WOW! those are great pics - wish I had them last weekend. I have now removed/installed these carbs 3 times this week. First time took awhile - Now its a piece of cake! My suspicion is that the floats might need adjusting - especially since I did not check them when I had the carbs on my bench as there are only 1,900 mi on them. But now I read that maybe the Yamaha factory guys/gals might have a bad day now & then. I bought a repair manual on CD from an Ebay vendor, which has good schematics, but no detailed instructions. Anyone know if there are pics of "PART 2" anywhere, i.e. - inside of rebuilding of carbs?

dharnie Posted January 10, 2008 Author #17 Posted January 10, 2008 kidsquid - I thought warranty is up to 5 years - this is an 2001, plus it was neglected by guy who bought it new in 2002 by leaving it outside only under a fabric cover. paint is great shape but those metal parts that like to get some corrosion and little rust specks in the chome, did - so I will be cleaning it up on non-riding days.
dharnie Posted January 10, 2008 Author #18 Posted January 10, 2008 Rode the 2001 red venture tonight about 5 mi. after putting most of her together! rode to get gas and up highway and back. it handles great! hauls butt too! kept it under 80 mph. was surprised that it let a jet stream of air between cowlings right unto my knees. also disappointed in whine of engine/trans. it's worse than my Vulcan Kawasaki. my Honda Sabre has no whine but can't compare to the venture's ride! venture very responsive and glides over rough road surfaces! this venture handles like a sports car compared to the v twin - more like a jet!

It might have been as late as 2002, but Yamaha might do a good gesture..... It might be worth trying.....
Cougar Posted January 10, 2008 #20 Posted January 10, 2008 Also, I might want to add , have you inspected the inside of the fuel tank yet... I mean with a flashlight.... I bought my bike in the same manner as you did , but it was stored in a shed. with the fuel level on empty.. with the mid west winters the TANK WILL RUST to no END , I mean REALLY BAD... This is also what help cuz my carbs to get so cruded-up. I had to remove tank and krem it. so far so good. worked great. I also have checked and changed my filter since then 3 time every time the filters have been spotless (clean) http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=524 As you can see from my cross section of my original filter. dharnie Posted January 11, 2008 Author #22 Posted January 11, 2008 Yeah Cougar the tank is very clean as are petcock and carb float bowl screens and the inline gas filter clean too. Glad I don't have your tank situation! Rode her again tonight. She handles awesome! Getting better at runnin her through the gears. Think I will drive her over to the local Yamaha dealer Sat and see what they say they will do for me about the clutch basket recall. My reach feels a little cramped compared to my Honda 1100 twin. I get on the twin and the reach feels perfect. Get on my RSV (and the seat feels so much more comfortable, even though the Honda has a nice compfy Mustang seat) but I feel like I have to move the seat back like in my car. Also feel a little strain in my lower back. I see a lot of driver back rests on RSVs - maybe there is a reason? I am average 6' 190#. Looking at the handle bar I don't see room to move it forward obviously because of the inner fairing is only 1/2" away. Is there a solution to get a longer reach? Or maybe its like a new pair of shoes for me - I will get used to the fit? You guys (& gals?) have been awesome here in helping this newbie out! Thanks!
