Is it an actual "backfire" or is it just a light "popping" sound?

Are the exhausts stock?

 

Any changes to the stock baffles can cause exhaust popping that is both unharmful and incurable ... It might hurt the ears.

 

If it is stock, and has just started then you are getting air where no air needs to be "popping", or unburned gas exhausting "back-fiing"

Often times a carb sync will reduce or eliminate this problem. However, if there are leaks in the exhaust system, this can cause it also.

 

Get together with another member here and have the carbs synced. There are several of us that have the tools and gauges to do it. Takes about 15 minutes and 6 beers.

Ok I will say it.. remove the AIS system.. there I said it

Check the exhaust header pipe welds for cracks. I think the 05 RSV had an issue with welds cracking.

Carb sync first. Then see how it sounds..

My 08 RSV was popping when i got off the gas, so last weekend i synced the carbs and it all went way.

First sync the carbs. Second make sure there are no leaks where air can enter the exhaust. Third repair or remove the AIS.

 

If it is the AIS system. Make sure both vacuum lines are connected. Determine which side is popping. Check the AIS hoses. Repair the air valve diaphragm. Or as some have done, remove the system.

 

As a side note for those who are curious.

During normal operation the AIS system allows the bike to siphon air into the exhaust. This causes excess emissions to be burned off in the exhaust. During deceleration extra fuel is available in the exhaust. So the AIS system turns off to avoid little mini explosions we call popping. High vacuum produced during deceleration is fed to the air valve diaphragm which overcomes spring pressure and closes the air passage to the exhaust.

Make sure you are downshifting, match gear to engine speed... lugging in 5th while going downhill at 30 mph will make mine have a "popping" sound.

Mine had that when it was new. After the first carb synch I've not had it anymore. 92000 miles.
