Silver Dollar Posted January 5, 2008 #1 Posted January 5, 2008 Greetings friends, I'm new to the Venture. I have a 2005 model, and my questions are: Is there an aftermarket tach for the RSV? And, is there a rev limiter on these bikes? Can someone post the max spped in each gear, and the normal speed shift points? I came off of a VTX1800 to the RSV and haven't gotten the chance to ride it much due to the weather. So I'm kinda having trouble breaking myself of the VTX's characteristics.
pegscraper Posted January 5, 2008 #2 Posted January 5, 2008 Yes, there are aftermarket tachs available. You'll want to rev it up more than you did your V twin. This bike is rev limited at about 7500 rpm, and it doesn't hurt anything at all to run it up to that. You should be able to get to around 85 or so in second gear before hitting the limiter. Average shift points would be around 25, 40, 50, and 60. That assumes a top speed of 60. If your top speed will be higher or you want to go a little faster, stretch them out some. Or for a lower top speed shorten them up. You probably already know that much. This bike is geared very high; fifth gear is an extreme overdrive. Whatever speed you're going to run, don't shift up into fifth gear until you're all done accelerating. The engine is basically a detuned V Max engine. Don't be afraid to wind it up. Yes, most of us are patiently waiting for better weather.
rosebud Posted January 5, 2008 #3 Posted January 5, 2008 If you do a search on tachs you will find several pages of posts about them. This link is to the thread I posted the tach that we put on an 06 and several of the posts on this thread include pictures. http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=6230&highlight=tach
Sleeperhawk Posted January 5, 2008 #4 Posted January 5, 2008 Around 110 to 115 on the speedo in fourth or fifth, rev limiter kicks in, or is it the speed limiter This was a pic going to RiderDuke's, but Muffinman and I were already dropping on speed due to cagers getting in our way :rotf:
V7Goose Posted January 5, 2008 #5 Posted January 5, 2008 Here is a picture of my tach - you can get them in white too. This is the only one of which I know that is smaller than 2" diameter. Drag Specialties sells two tachs that are very similar - this one is the "mini" and comes complete with a mounting bracket. It is a little hard to find, as most vendors only seem to carry the larger one. Goose
BuddyRich Posted January 5, 2008 #6 Posted January 5, 2008 Mine hits the rev limit around 6700. the Dyna3000 will allow you to raise it. Coming off that big V-Twin you may have a habit of shifting way to early. These V4's really like the upper rpms and will flat out get up and go if you remember that. When she starts missin you have hit the rev limit. The engine will sound likes its screaming compared to a V2 but its not.
KeithR Posted January 5, 2008 #7 Posted January 5, 2008 Not sure if this chart will help or not ? Keith
RedRider Posted January 5, 2008 #8 Posted January 5, 2008 All I know is that if you are cruising at 50 mph and need to get around a guy quickly, the bike enjoys being dropped into 3rd for acceleration. It will kick to 75 in a hurry allowing you to jump to 4th. If you need more speed than that - you should have waited for a bigger passing lane. Welcome to the best bike and forum around. RR
Bummer Posted January 5, 2008 #9 Posted January 5, 2008 I like the Baron's mini tach with the reservoir mounting plate.

I'd like to see the back and also how you have the wires/tubing run. Thanks, Jerry

But I’m curious as to the others you have, especially the digital readout in the center. Could you please explain them all, and how you mounted them, Thanks.
Silver Dollar Posted January 6, 2008 Author #12 Posted January 6, 2008 Thanks everyone. The information is most helpful.

I originally did a full writeup on installing a multi-gauge set, but that was before the total crash two years ago that wiped out everything on this sight, so we lost it all. I need to recreate it, but never got to doing that. Now that I have a new RSV and need to mount gauges on it too, I guess I have a reason! Anyway, I personally insist on having full gauges, including both a volt meter and an ammeter, but we all know there is not much room to mount gauges on these bikes. These pictures were from my first attempt on the 05, and I have some new ideas I am going to try on my 07 soon. You can already see how I improved the location of the tach. The triple gauge set on the left is from JCW, the gauges are smaller than 2" (rare and hard to find), and consist of ammeter, oil pressure, and water temp. The five-function digital gauge on the steering head is Showchrome, available for best price from CASporttouring.com, and has clock (so I don't need to keep switching the odometer in the dash), volt meter, and inside/outside temp. In addition, there are LED and audible warnings along with a black ice alert. Hooking up the gauges took quite a bit of figuring, but turned out to be quite simple in the end. I guess now I have to get it all re-posted, huh?
hhoffmanlv Posted January 7, 2008 #14 Posted January 7, 2008 Is the Tach mounted using the clamp that came with it?? If not what did you use? I would like to add a tach, but can't bring myself to pay the price Baron's is asking for them. Found a site with the mini for $53.99. Shipping for me is $18 .. here is the link http://www.oneidasuzuki.com/store/parts-accessories/drag-specialties-mini-8000-rpm-tachometer.html# Anyone see a better price?
V7Goose Posted January 7, 2008 #15 Posted January 7, 2008 That is not the same tach - it is over 2"; the mini I use is 1 7/8". You can also tell by looking closely at the face - Drag Specialties is on the bottom instead of the top. Another key indicator in the pictures is the mounting tab - the small one shows just a straight mounting tab sticking down, and the more common 2.4" tach has a "V" shaped mounting tab. Here is one source: http://www.phatperformanceparts1.com/merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=7805-6947 The part number for the black one is 7805-6948. I do NOT use the bar clamp that comes with this tach - it is large and uses pinch blocks that can mar the chrome. I prefer the Fomotion clock mount - very nice chrome unit, but costs about $20. I have also used a simple 1" "P" clamp from JCW - those only cost about $3. To mount it under the dash, I have to remove the bracket, put it in a vise, and bend it back 90 degrees. Here are pictures of the tach mounting and both the black and white tachs together for comparison. Sorry for the poor quality - took them with my cell phone: Goose
hhoffmanlv Posted January 8, 2008 #16 Posted January 8, 2008 Thankyou for the heads up on the Tach I linked to. I will look for the Fomotion setup.
hhoffmanlv Posted January 12, 2008 #17 Posted January 12, 2008 My Drag Specialties Tach and Formotion clamp have arrived.. !! Before I tackle the project, can you recall the how-to for the wiring ? Or any other Tips , you could share. I really liked the 90 degree idea and I went with the white face model.
V7Goose Posted January 12, 2008 #18 Posted January 12, 2008 Unfortunately, I don't remember specifics of the wire connections - they are documented elsewhere on this site or the other Venture sites. One of the coils is right under the tank, so that is an easy connection point. I tapped one of the hot wires coming off the ignition switch for the main power - I got "lucky" in a weird way - the wire I chose goes dead when I turn on the four-way flashers! I thought this was strange and a PIA at first, but I have come to like it as an extra reminder if I leave the flashers on for some reason. You may find the blue LED light in that tach too bright at night - many do. Easy to reduce it with a small dropping resistor in series. Try around 100 - 150 ohms as a start and go to 220 or 330 if you still want it dimmer. Goose
Bummer Posted January 12, 2008 #19 Posted January 12, 2008 can you recall the how-to for the wiring ?Up under the piece of plastic that covers the neck on the right side is a coil. The coil has two wiring lugs. One is smaller than normal. The small one is signal. The other lug can be used for switched power.
hhoffmanlv Posted January 12, 2008 #20 Posted January 12, 2008 Ok , thanks for the information! I am sure the 'light' will bother me, I would like to be able to dimm the dash! Maybe a variable potentiometer would be an easy fix and offer some flexibility for the tach?? I like the idea of grabbing power and signal off the same coil, but it seems to me there are a few more wires hanging off the tach ?? I will have to get it out and study it some more. Todays weather here is "WAY" to good to be doing any projects other than riding.. so I will do that 1st !!!

hhoffmanlv Posted January 14, 2008 #22 Posted January 14, 2008 Ok, not alot of documentation with this tach.. But this is what it shows. Green wire to negative side of coil. Black wire to ground. Yellow wire to Lamp on ?? Red wire to ignition "on" DC 12v ?? So the ones I have question marks after are confusing to me... can anyone shed some light ?

I would assume the yellow wire is for the led and needs to run to a switched wire. Should be same one as the red. Hopefully some one who knows for sure will be along soon.
Freebird Posted January 14, 2008 #24 Posted January 14, 2008 Take a look at this thread. Brand may be different but installation should be the same. http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=8810 Be sure to note that from my personal experience, ground and negative are NOT the same thing on these tachs. Make sure that you hook ground to a ground and negative to the negative side of the coil.

Yes, the yellow wire is for the dash lights, so unless you have added a separate circuit for that, just combine it with the red for switched power on. Goose
