No headlight

I took my (new to me) 1986 Royale out for the first time this weekend for a shake-down run. But when I got back, I noticed that my headlight was not working. In after-thought, I don't remember if it was working when I took off, I checked turn signals and brake lights, etc, but not headlight. No warning indicators on the dash lit up. I know before this "Sea-foam drive it like I stole event", it was working when I was checking the bike over.

 

Anyways, I've checked the bulb - ohm'd good. filiments intact but only 1.2 volts present.

Opened, cleaned left side handle bar switch, also minimum (1.2) voltage present on both low and high.

 

Now, I'm thinking that it might be in the starter switch, since I'm not getting any indication of problems on the cmu and I never started it until yesterday.

 

Am I on the right track?

Check for cold solder joint inside the cmu (center of dash that has warning lights) there or four places that seem to turn loose and will stop headlight from working.

Make sure the starting switch is returning to the position it should when you release it. Once bike starts pull out on it a little. My 85 sticks when started at times and no headlight.

I lost my headlight on my '86 on the last day of the Cody rally last year. Everything seem to check out at first.

 

When I got home I found that the fuse holder (on the side after the fuse) had broken. It visually looked fine but wasn't making good contact. When I went to remove the fuse, half of the holder fell off.

 

It was time to do the fuse box upgrade. I had the parts, just hadn't taken the time. Made the complete change out in about 30 min.

 

If you're checking power using a meter, check power at the wire after the fuse, not just the fuse itself.

Same here. Best thing is just take the whole assembly off the handle bar, take it all apart and clean all the contacts and moving parts. Beware of the little springs and balls inside, they like to travel.

The problem is solved!!! It was the starter switch hanging up and not letting the headlight to come on. Now to take those controls apart and clean before the weekend.
