Steve S Posted January 2, 2008 #1 Posted January 2, 2008 Has anyone switched from the stock diaphram pressure plate to the Barnett Spring type pressure plate. If you have, did you change clutch discs as well or just the pressure plate? Were the results worth the expense for the conversion????
Tartan Terror Posted January 2, 2008 #2 Posted January 2, 2008 you dont need to change the stock plates if they still are within specs. I would recommend doing the upgrade in that the inner most mini plate and disc should be changed to a full size plate. I ever more so suggest that you use the stuff from PCW racing as it is a better design that will save you money and will work more like it was designed. Look at my write up in the tech section and you will see how its done and what to use. You wont be disappointed.
wuzfuzz Posted January 3, 2008 #3 Posted January 3, 2008 .......... I went with the BARNETT SR-2 kit with the Pressure Plate and coil springs. A very nice improvement over the oem. A little heavier clutch lever pull, but you become used to the change very quickly. Although I also bought the discs from BARNETT, I did not install them and left everything else alone. When I did the conversion, my '03 was only 3 months old. ken.jo@shaw.ca
MAINEAC Posted January 3, 2008 #4 Posted January 3, 2008 My clutch was slipping on the top end and I replaced the pressure plate and the clutch fiber plates... It was a might as well kinda thing... I figured while I was in there I might as well swap the disks out... Now I have a Barnett clutch that should be good for 75,000+ miles.
Rick Butler Posted January 3, 2008 #5 Posted January 3, 2008 Steve, If you have the money and like a pretty pressure plate that is never seen, then I'd opt for the Barnett kit. Otherwise, I'd take Tartan's advice and get the heavy duty pressure plate from PCW Racing. And changing out the most inner fiber plate with a full sized plate is also a good option. When you ask about the pressure plate, they will probably ask you if you want the upgrade, which includes an extra fiber plate and a gasket. http://www.pcwracing.net/featured.htm I installed a PCW pressure plate when my bike was pretty new and it lasted about 60k before I had to change out the fiber plates. But the Barnett kit will work just as good, it's just a little more money. But if you already have some miles on your bike and the clutch is starting to slip in high gear, I would advise you to replace the fiber plates and rough up the metal plates to take the glaze off. And the Yamaha fiber plates are as good as they come regardless of the literature and claims on the Barnett plates. Hope this helps, Rick
Squeeze Posted January 3, 2008 #6 Posted January 3, 2008 I totally agree with Rick Butler's Statement. As long as your not going to more Power on the Engine, there is no need for the Barnett Plates.
Guest KitCarson Posted January 3, 2008 #7 Posted January 3, 2008 I put a heavy duty pressure plate in Crickett when I was going through all the clutch basket stuff........last week I put the stock parts back in...Why? I sit at the stops with the bike in gear and clutch pulled in, in stop and go traffic it does work on your hand........the lever pull is significantly enough more to cause discomfort at a long stop......or in stop and go traffic........I do not pull a trailer......was just something I did at the time......no rhyme or reason for it, but back to stock now.
