Most computers will let you press Fn and the f3 button to put the monitor to sleep and lock the computer. On my machines I have to press power to get the monitor back on, and then login with password, but ymmv.

Fn keys are normally found on laptops. If you buy a cheap accessory keyboard like I did, they often have a "sleep" key which duplicates the keystrokes normally required to put your computer to sleep.

XP Home Edition

Right-Click on the desktop and choose Properties.

Go to Screen Saver

You should then see a place for power settings

In there you can define the sleep setting for the monitor and/or the hard drive.

After reading my original post i realized that i hadn't provided all the info i could have. I have always had my screen saver and monitor invoked to shut down after 5 minutes.... i was hopeful to find some keyboard stroke(s) to turn my monitor off as i was finished with my session. It doesn't appear that this is possible though...thanks all for your suggestions !
