I told the A**wipe to show me the E-Bay ad it was going thru. He replied "I had it listed on E-Bay and couldn't get a buyer"

Did you ask him about his shovel ... you know ... the one for the b/s !

tell him the only way you can make the deal is face to face with him or his representative. Money will change hands only upon inspection of physical item, proper proof of ownership and then will pay in cash.

I'm willing to bet you will never hear from him again.

I went thru this for a Kabota estate tractor with loader, blower, mower etc etc...about 1/2 what it should have cost.

He was in the army in Europe, tractor was on the north west coast of BC

He was willing to pay for the shipping as long as ebay escrow service had the money. Then only on my approval ebay would release the funds to him.

I knew it was a scam (as stated...ebay doesn't have an escrow service) but I decided to have some fun and see what I could find out.

I asked if I could see it but he's not there and it is a long distance.

Then I asked if I could send a friend to check it out....but he had some reason why that wouldn't work either. That's when I told him I knew he was a scammer and reminded him of what kind of low life person he really was.

Long story short...I tried to report them to the RCMP internet fraud squad...but I was told there was nothing they could do because:

1) No crime had been committed. An offer to sell at a low price is not a crime It's only once you have been scammed that they can act.

2) There was a huge probability that the seller was not even in Canada. With the internet they could be anywhere .

3) As soon as they suck anyone in a get their money, the "escrow service" account is closed and reopened under a different name in a different city. Who knows, with all the With identity theft, it could have been reopened under your name!

Mike bought his bike off Craigslist. Almost $2000 under the kbb and NADA values too. Was a local guy who remarrried and the new wife put her foot down about riding the bike his ex bought him. He needed a quick sale to make her happy and didn't feel right about selling for the listed values since he's stored it a few yrs. Was even kind enough to ride it to our house after Mike paid him since the bike needed adjusting to Mike's build. never been a problem in the yr since we brought it home.

My understanding of Ebay is that buyer protection only works if you buy thru ebay using paypal.

My daughter and son in law got scamed buying a stolen car thru ebay using paypal and were able to get their money back but the whole deal was thru ebay. This seems to be on Craigslist?

I don't bother with anything on craigslist ( or any site) anymore that doesn't have a phone number. Real, non-scam, wholesale or below market deals on craigslist are sold generally within hours if not minutes of posting. There are people that do nothing but scour for these deals 24-7.

Then there are the scam people just trying to add to their email addy list for spam. The last ad i responded too with no phone number seemed innocent and legit enough. A floor liner and a cargo net for a 2007 and newer Hyundai Sante Fe listed as being in my town, Not your typical scam ad at a price too good to be true. A couple of email exchanges and the real clue is when you give them a phone number to call you to make arrangements. Then no more responses and then start getting spam messages.

I mean think about. Price is low because they really need to sell (or similar typical BS), but no way for you to contact directly, pick up immediately and pay cash???

There are times when some of the CL listings throw all kinds of red flags at you. I ran across an ad for '95 Linclon Towncar several years ago posted with the price of $900.00. The pics were of a very nice looking car and detail shots showing it was in excellent condition.

I called the number (an out of area area code number at that) for the seller and asked about the price being correct. Yep, it was. I asked about seeing it and he said he was traveling at the time and would not be able to show it to me for a while. When asked where the car was and if I be able to drive by and see it I got the run around.

I asked a bunch of questions and got good answers but was not able to get to see the car.

I gave him my cell number and asked him to let me know when we could get together. I figured I'd never hear from him. About 4 days later I got the call back and he said he was home and if I was still interested I could see the car the next morning at 10:00 AM.

The address was only a couple miles from my house so I drove by that evening. No car in sight. But I went over the next morning and found one of the cleanest Lincolns of that age I'd ever ran across. He came out and handed me the keys and I fired it up. Purred like a kitten. Talked about the cars history a bit and he was the second owner. Car was sold new in Atlanta, GA and he bought it there from the 1st owner. He then moved to Texas with it and had only recently moved to Nebraska. Car had seen a good life as far as the weather elements. It was flawless.

Asked asked about why he was selling it for $900.00. Turned out he was ticked off at the Lincoln dealer where he had gone for a minor repair. The tab was $900.00. He felt ripped off so he said the heck with them. Wanted to break even on the $900.00 and was picking up his new BMW the next day.

So when I left he caught me backing out and handed me a box. It was filled with all the service and repair invoices from the day it was bought new. I had to ask him why he had not been able to sell the car. He said he had dozens of calls but about everyone of them had hung up on him when he explained his situation. I was the only one that had left a number to call back.

He told me he didn't want to give out the address where the car was as his wife was home alone and he was concerned about some of the folks who had called. Ya know ..... CL shoppers. I told him I had been concerned about the out of state phone number and he said he still had his cell service out of Texas. Hadn't changed it yet.

Some times ya catch a break. Still driving that car and only spent about $500.00 on parts for repairs. Bargin of the year.

The other side of the scam is when you are selling an item and they want to pay with a cashiers check or money order. Either one is a fraud even if they look good. I had a friend selling ocnstruction equipment and he was hammered with the I'll send you a cashiers check and you work with my shipper routine.

If they insist on paying with a cashier's check, meet them at the bank and verify it is good. Then cash it right there.

I was hoping that would be case this time but it ain't looking good. Tried to give him every chance short of just sending him the cash and that ain't happening. Lot of the wrong things with the ad could be explained I think I'm hoping for nothing on this one. Got the Warden talked into going 4-wheeling with me and some of the clan and don't want to dump a lot of money on one of the things. Figure if I can get her out on one of the the Bike might be doable.
